Los Angeles International Airport Los Angeles International Airport (IATA: LAX, ICAO: KLAX, FAA LID: LAX) is the primary airport serving theGreater Los Angeles Area, the second-most populated metropolitan area in the United States. It is most often referred to by its IATA airport code LAX, with the letters pronounced individually. LAX is located in southwestern Los Angelesalong the Pacific coast in the neighborhood of Westchester, 16 miles (26 km) from the downtown core and is the primary airport of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), an agency of the Los Angeles city government formerly known as the Department of Airports. SONY VAIO PCG-792L Laptop Keyboard In 2011, LAX was the sixth busiest airport in the world after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport,Beijing Capital International Airport, London Heathrow Airport, Chicago O'Hare International Airport, and Tokyo Haneda International Airport with 61,862,052 passengers.[3][4] It is also the only airport to rank among the top five U.S. airports for both passenger and cargo traffic.[5] IBM Thinkpad R61i Laptop Keyboard LAX is the busiest airport in the Greater Los Angeles Area, but other airports including Bob Hope Airport, John Wayne Airport, Long Beach Airport, and LA/Ontario International Airport also serve the region. LAX is also the busiest airport in California and the West Coast of the United States in terms of flight operations, passenger traffic and air cargo activity, leading it to be referred to as the "Gateway to the Pacific Rim." HP G61-450EE Laptop Keyboard HP AETT9U00010 Laptop Keyboard Mines Field was dedicated and opened as the official airport of Los Angeles in 1930, and the city purchased it to be a municipal airfield in 1937. The name was officially changed to Los Angeles Airport in 1941, ACER Aspire 5742 Laptop Keyboard and to Los Angeles International Airport in 1949.[9] The main airline airports for Los Angeles had been Burbank Airport (then known as Union Air Terminal, and later Lockheed) in Burbank, California and the Grand Central Airport in Glendale. By 1940 most airlines served Burbank only; in late 1946 most airline flights moved to LAX, but Burbank always retained a few.[10]IBM Thinkpad R61i Laptop Keyboard Mines Field did not extend west of Sepulveda Boulevard (backwards 1939 aerial view); Sepulveda was rerouted c. 1950 to loop around the west ends of the extended east-west runways (now runways 25L and 25R), which by November 1950 were 6,000 feet (1,800 m) long. (Aerial view looking south) A tunnel was completed in 1953 allowing Sepulveda Boulevard to revert to straight and pass beneath the two runways; it was the first tunnel of its kind. For the next few years the two runways were 8,500 feet (2,600 m) long.[9]FUJITSU Amilo Mini Ui 3520 Laptop Keyboard ASUS X53S Laptop Keyboard On July 10, 1956 Boeing's 707 prototype (the 367-80) visited LAX. The Los Angeles Times said it was its first appearance at a "commercial airport" outside the Seattle area.[11]TOSHIBA Satellite L750-ST4N02 Laptop Keyboard The April 1957 Official Airline Guide showed 66 weekday departures on United Airlines, 32 American Airlines, 32 Western Airlines, 27 TWA, 9 Southwest, 5 Bonanza Air Lines and 3 Mexicana Airlines; also 22 flights a week on Pan American World Airways and 5 a week on Scandinavian Airlines (the only direct flights to Europe). IBM Lenovo ThinkPad R51 1833 Laptop Keyboard In 1958 the architecture firm Pereira & Luckman was contracted to design a master plan for the complete re-design of the airport in anticipation of the "jet age." The plan, developed along with architects Welton Becket and Paul Williams, called for a massive series of terminals and parking structures to be built in the central portion of the property, with these buildings connected at the center by a huge steel-and-glass dome. The plan was never realized, and shortly thereafter theTheme Building was constructed on the site originally intended for the dome. DELL Vostro 1015 Laptop Keyboard American Airlines' 707-123s flew the first jet passengers out of LAX to New York in January 1959; the first wide-body jets were TWA's Boeing 747s to New York in early 1970.[9] All terminals were originally satellite buildings out in the middle of the tarmac, reached by underground tunnels from the ticketing area.[12]SAMSUNG NP-N145-JP03 Laptop Keyboard In 1981 the airport began a $700 million expansion in preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics. To streamline traffic flow and ease congestion the U-shaped roadway leading to the terminal entrances was given a second level, TOSHIBA Satellite L755-S5214 Laptop Keyboard with the lower level for arriving passengers and the upper level for departing. Connector buildings between the ticketing areas and the satellite buildings were added, changing the gate layout to a "pier" design and completely enclosing the facilities. Two new terminals (Terminal 1 and the International Terminal) were constructed and Terminal 2, then two decades old, was rebuilt. Multi-story parking structures were also built in the center of the airport.[9]HP Mini 210-2030ez Laptop Keyboard On July 8, 1982, groundbreaking for the two new terminals were conducted by Mayor Tom Bradley and World War II aviator General James Doolittle. The $123 million, 963,000-square-foot (89,500 m2) International Terminal was opened on June 11, 1984, and named in Bradley's honor.[9] On April 29, 1992 the airport was closed for violence and cleanups after the 1992 Los Angeles Riots over the Rodney Kingbeating. DELL Latitude E5400 Laptop Keyboard The airport was closed again on January 17, 1994 due to the Northridge earthquake. In 1996 a $29 million, 277-foot-tall (84 m) air traffic control tower was built near the Theme Building.[9]SAMSUNG M40 Laptop Keyboard SONY KFRSBA019A Laptop Keyboard In 2000, before Los Angeles hosted the Democratic National Convention, fifteen glass pylons up to ten stories high were placed in a circle around the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Century Boulevard, with additional pylons of decreasing height following Century Boulevard eastward, evoking a sense of departure and arrival. Conceived by the designers at Selbert Perkins Design, HP Pavilion dv6-2112sa Laptop Keyboard the towers and 30 foot "LAX" letters provide a gateway to the airport and offer a welcoming landmark for visitors.[13] Illuminated from the inside, the pylons slowly cycle through a rainbow of colors that represents the multicultural makeup of Los Angeles and can be customized to celebrate events, holidays or a season.  HP G62-225NR Laptop Keyboard This was part of an overall face-lift that included new signage and various other cosmetic enhancements that was led by Ted Tokio Tanaka Architects. The LAX pylons underwent improvements in 2006, as stage lighting inside the cylinders was replaced with LED lights to conserve energy, make maintenance easier and enable on-demand cycling through various color effects.[14]ACER Aspire 5930 Laptop Keyboard At various times LAX has been a hub for TWA, Air California, Braniff International, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines,Pacific Southwest Airlines, US Airways, Western Airlines, and the Flying Tiger Line.  HP 597635-001 Laptop Keyboard Starting in the mid-1990s under Mayors Richard Riordan and James Hahn, modernization and expansion plans for LAX were prepared, only to be stymied by a coalition of residents who live near the airport. They cited increased noise, pollution and traffic impacts of the project. In late 2005, newly elected Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was able to reach a compromise, allowing some modernization to go forward while encouraging future growth among other facilities in the region. FUJITSU Lifebook P1620 Laptop Keyboard It is illegal[dubious – discuss] to limit the number of passengers that can use an airport; however, in December 2005 the city agreed to limit their construction of passengers gates to 163. In exchange, civil lawsuits were abandoned, to allow the city to complete badly needed improvements to the airport.[15]HP AE0P7U00010 Laptop Keyboard Lenovo 3000 N200 Laptop Keyboard On March 25, 2007 Runway 7R/25L reopened after being shifted 55 feet (17 m) south to prevent runway incursions and prepare the runway for the Airbus A380. Additional storm drains and enhanced runway lighting were added. Runway 25L is now 800 feet (240 m) south of the parallel runway centerline to centerline, allowing a parallel taxiway between the runways; the taxiway was completed in 2008. DELL 454RX Laptop Keyboard On September 18, 2006 Los Angeles World Airports started a $503 million facelift of the Tom Bradley International Terminal. Improvements include installing new paging, air conditioning and electrical systems, along with new elevators, escalators, baggage carousels, and a digital sign that will automatically update flight information. Also a large explosives-detection machine will be incorporated into the terminal's underground baggage system, and the federal government will fund part of the system. HP Pavilion dv6-2114sa Laptop Keyboard According to the Los Angeles Times, in February 2007, many Pacific Rim carriers began reducing flights to LAX in favor of more modern airports, such as San Francisco International Airport, due to the aging facilities at Tom Bradley International Terminal.[16] TOSHIBA Satellite L775-S7352 Laptop Keyboard On August 15, 2007 the Los Angeles City Council approved a $1.2 billion project to construct a new 10-gate terminal to handle international flights using the A380.[17] Adding the first new gates built since the early 1980s, the new structure is to be built directly west of the Tom Bradley International Terminal on a site that is occupied mostly by aircraft hangars, with passengers to be ferried to the building by a people mover extending from the terminal.[17] It is expected to be completed in 2012. HP G61-421SO Laptop Keyboard On March 19, 2007 the Airbus A380 made its debut at LAX, landing on runway 24L. Though LAX was originally supposed to be the first US city to see the A380, Airbus later decided to forgo LAX in favor of New York's JFK. After city officials fought for the super-jumbo jet to land at LAX, the A380 landed simultaneously in New York's JFK airport and LAX.[18]SONY VAIO VGN-FS315 Laptop Keyboard APPLE A1181 Laptop Keyboard On March 31, 2008 the Los Angeles Times reported that foreign carriers were once again flocking to LAX's Tom Bradley International Terminal. The weaker dollar caused a surge in demand for US travel, resulting in airlines either adding new destinations or increasing frequencies to existing routes. New airlines that introduced flights to LAX are Virgin Australia and Emirates Airlines. COMPAQ Presario CQ50-211NR Laptop Keyboard Emirates has operations to Dubai. In 2011, nonstop service to Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport was inaugurated by Turkish Airlines, providing the first nonstop service between Los Angeles and Turkey, while Iberia Airlines reinstated nonstop Los Angeles-Madrid flights as part of its inclusion in the Oneworld alliance. Meanwhile, Korean Airlines, SONY Vaio VGN-AW11M/H Laptop Keyboard Qantas, Air China, and Air France have all augmented their services to Los Angeles by adding new flights to existing routes. The influx of new flights comes amidst the renovation of the airport and consolidates LAX's status as the premiere international gateway to the Western United States.[19]HP pavilion DV7-1005eo Laptop Keyboard Qantas launched service with the Airbus A380 on October 20, 2008, using the west side remote gates. Though initially deployed between LAX-SYD, Qantas' A380 service was extended to the popular LAX-Melbourne route. SONY VAIO VGN-NR11Z/S Laptop Keyboard Before the 1930s, existing airports used a two-letter abbreviation based on the weather stations at the airports. At that time, "LA" served as the designation for Los Angeles Airport. But with the rapid growth in the aviation industry the designations expanded to three letters c. 1947, and "LA" became "LAX." The letter "X" has no specific meaning in this identifier.[22] "LAX" is also used for the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro and by Amtrak for Union Station indowntown Los Angeles. Throughout the 20th century, it was one of the fastest growing regions in the United States, HP Pavilion dv4t-1300 CTO Laptop Keyboard although growth has slowed since 2000. As of 2005, the official estimate of the population of the Los Angeles metropolitan area is more than 12.9 million, while in 2009 the larger five-county region had a population of over 17.6 million. Either definition makes it the second-largest core-based statistical area in the country, behind the New York metropolitan area.[1]TOSHIBA Qosmio F45-AV411 Laptop Keyboard The agglomeration of the urbanized Greater Los Angeles area surrounds the urban core of the county of Los Angeles, California. The urban term[clarification needed] is defined to refer to the more-or-less continuously urbanized area stretching from Ventura to the southern border of Orange County, and from the Pacific Ocean to the Inland Empire. HP Pavilion G6-1223TX Laptop Keyboard The Greater Los Angeles area is generally taken to include the Los Angeles metropolitan area, the Inland Empire, andVentura County – all part of the Census Bureau defined Combined Statistical Area. The term "Greater Los Angeles" does not include San Diego and Imperial counties, whose urbanized areas are not geographically continuous with the urbanized area surrounding Los Angeles. Rather, San Diego is part of the San Diego–Tijuana urban area. TOSHIBA Satellite L655D-SP5012M Laptop Keyboard The United States Census Bureau has designated the five county region as the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside, CAcombined statistical area, with a January 1, 2009 population estimate of 17,786,419.[2] According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Los Angeles metropolitan area has a total area of 4,850 square miles (12,561.442 km2), ASUS X53S Laptop Keyboard while the wider combined statistical area covers 33,954 square miles (87,940.456 km2), making it the largest metropolitan region in the United States by land area. However, more than half of this area lies in the sparsely populated eastern areas of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. HP AER15U00510 Laptop Keyboard Los Angeles has a long-standing reputation for sprawl. The area is in fact sprawling, but according to the 2000 Census, the "Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana" Urbanized Area (but not counting the portions of the Inland Empire in the Greater Los Angeles area) had a population density of 7,068 inhabitants per square mile (2,729 /km2), IBM Lenovo Thinkpad X201 Laptop Keyboard covering 1,668 square miles (4,320 km2) of land area, making it the most densely-populated Urbanized Area (as defined by the United States Census Bureau) in the United States.[3] For comparison, the "New York–Newark" Urbanized Area as a whole had a population density of 5,309 per square mile (2,050 /km2), covering 3,353 square miles (8,684 km2) of land area. TOSHIBA Satellite A500-ST5601 Laptop Keyboard Los Angeles' sprawl may originate in the region's decentralized structure. Its major commercial, financial, and cultural institutions are geographically dispersed rather than being concentrated in a single downtown or central area. Also, the population density of Los Angeles proper is low (approximately 7,500 people per square mile) when compared to some other large American cities such as New York City (27,500),  HP Probook 4515S Laptop Keyboard HP 597635-001 Laptop Keyboard San Francisco (17,000), and Chicago (11,800).[4] However, what gives the entire Los Angeles metro region a high density is the fact that many of the city's suburbs and satellites cities have high density rates.[5] Within its urbanized areas, Los Angeles is noted for having small lot sizes and low-rise buildings. Buildings in the area are low when compared to other large cities, TOSHIBA Satellite U305-S2812 Laptop Keyboard mainly due to zoning regulations regarding earthquakes. Los Angeles became a major city just as the Pacific Electric Railwayspread population to smaller cities much as interurbans did in East Coast cities. In the first decades of the twentieth century, the area was marked by a network of fairly dense but separate cities linked by rail. The ascendance of the automobile helped fill in the gaps between these commuter towns with lower-density settlements.[6] Packard Bell NEW90 Laptop Keyboard The term "Greater Los Angeles" can be used to denote the metropolitan area or the consolidated area. The term "Southland" is more nebulous and can refer to either. Additionally, the Southland is used more so in local media than by residents. Employment is not only in the downtown area, but consistently occurs outside the central core. As such, many people commute throughout the city and suburbs in various directions for their work and daily activities, with a large portion heading to the municipalities that are outside the city of Los Angeles.[14]TOSHIBA Satellite C655D-SP5003M Laptop Keyboard Unlike most metropolitan areas, regional identity remains a contentious issue in the Greater Los Angeles area, with many residents not acknowledging any association with the region as a whole. For example, while Los Angeles County and Orange County together make up the smaller MSA region, the two have a host of sharp demographic, political, and financial distinctions. DELL XPS 15 L502X Laptop Keyboard Orange County residents often attempt to be identified apart from Los Angeles although they make up the same metropolitan area. And while only 1.63% of Los Angeles residents commute to Orange County for work, over 6% of Orange County commuters head to Los Angeles for work.[15] Western Riverside County and San Bernardino County have become commuter regions characteristic of other suburban counties throughout the nation. Most residents in these counties commute to Los Angeles County and Orange County for employment.[16]ACER Aspire 5542 Laptop Keyboard Suburban areas surround the city of Los Angeles on all sides. In fact, the city proper has just a few miles of its land actually bordering the Pacific Ocean; some smaller geographically-sized suburbs and satellite cities tend to have large portions of their territory bordering the ocean. Starting in the early twentieth century, there was a large growth in population on the western edges of the city moving to the San Fernando Valley and out into the Conejo Valley in easternVentura HP Pavilion dv6-3351ef Laptop Keyboard County. Much of the working class whites migrated to this area during the 1960s and 1970s out of East and Central Los Angeles.[7] As a result, there was a large growth in population into the Conejo Valley and into Ventura County through the US 101 corridor. Making the US 101 a full freeway in the 1960s and expansions that followed helped makecommuting to Los Angeles easier and opened the way for development westward. Development in Ventura County and along the US 101 corridor remains controversial, SAMSUNG R522 Laptop Keyboard with open-space advocates battling those who feel business development is necessary to economic growth.[8] Although the area still has abundant amount of open space and land, almost all of it was put aside and mandated never to be developed as part of the master plan of each city. Because of this, the area which was once a relatively inexpensive area to buy real estate, saw rising real estate prices well into the 2000s.[9] Median home prices in the Conejo Valley for instance, now range from $700,000 to $2.2 million.[10]TOSHIBA Satellite L755-S5214 Laptop Keyboard The Los Angeles area continues to grow, principally on the periphery where new, cheaper, undeveloped areas are being sought.[11] As such, in these areas, populations as well as housing prices exploded, although the housing bubble popped late in the decade of the 2000s. Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, which contain large swaths of desert, DELL Inspiron n7110 Laptop Keyboard attracted most of the population increase between 2000 and 2006. Growth continues not only outside the existing urbanized area but also adjacent to existing development in the central areas.[12] As in virtually all US core cities, there is now vigorous residential development in the downtown area with both new buildings and renovation of former office buildings. The Los Angeles Downtown News keeps a list of ongoing development projects, updated every quarter.[13]ASUS X53S Laptop Keyboard Changes in house prices for the area are publicly tracked on a regular basis using the Case–Shiller index; the statistic is published by Standard & Poor's and is also a component of S&P's 10-city composite index of the value of the residential real estate market. HP G61-410SA Laptop Keyboard Some areas are bounded by natural features such as mountains or the ocean; others are marked by city boundaries, freeways, or other constructed landmarks. For example, Downtown Los Angeles is the area of Los Angeles roughly enclosed by three freeways and one river: the Harbor Freeway (SR 110) to the west, the Santa Ana Freeway (US 101) to the north, TOSHIBA Satellite L775D-S7332 Laptop Keyboard the Los Angeles River to the east, and the Santa Monica Freeway (I-10) to the south. Or, the San Fernando Valley: lying north-northwest of downtown ("The Valley") is a 15 miles (24 km) wide basin ringed by mountains.  DELL Latitude D620 Laptop Keyboard Some other areas of Los Angeles include the Westside; South L.A. (formerly known as South Central L.A.); and the San Pedro/Harbor City area. Adjoining areas that are outside the actual city boundaries of the incorporated city of Los Angeles include the South Bay, the Gateway Cities, the San Gabriel Valley and the Foothills. TOSHIBA Satellite L775D-S7220 Laptop Keyboard The San Pedro/Harbor City area was annexed by the city of Los Angeles so the city could have access to and control over the Port of Los Angeles. It is connected to the rest of L.A. only by a narrow corridor that generally follows the Harbor Freeway. Many Angelenos consider the Eastside to be the area east of the Los Angeles River, south of Glendale and Pasadena, and north of the Gateway Cities, including the area of unincorporated Los Angeles County that includes East Los Angeles. TOSHIBA Satellite L300 Laptop Keyboard City boundaries within Greater Los Angeles are quite complicated. For example, Beverly Hills and West Hollywood are completely surrounded by the City of Los Angeles with the exception of a small border shared between the two cities. Another example is Culver City completely surrounded by L.A. except for where it shares boundaries with the unincorporated communities of Ladera Heights and Baldwin Hills. TOSHIBA 92.N4XBC.A01 Laptop Keyboard Both Santa Monica and Marina del Rey are surrounded by L.A. as well, with regard to their ocean side. San Fernando in the northern corner of the San Fernando Valley is also an incorporated city entirely surrounded by L.A. territory. TOSHIBA Satellite l525 Laptop Keyboard Despite the large footprint of the City of L.A., a majority of the land area within Los Angeles County is unincorporated and under the primary jurisdiction of Los Angeles County. Much of this land however is that of which cannot be easily developed; geographic features such as the Santa Monica Mountains, San Gabriel Mountains ranges, and the Mojave Desert. Developed land in these regions is observed on the fringes of incorporated cities, some of which are fully developed. HP pavilion DV7-1000 Laptop Keyboard The Los Angeles metropolitan area comprises Los Angeles County (9,862,049), and Orange County (3,010,759). IBM Lenovo Thinkpad X201 Laptop Keyboard The explosive growth of the region in the 20th century can be attributed to its favorable Mediterranean climate, the availability of land and many booming industries such as oil, automobile and rubber, motion pictures and aerospace which in turn attracted millions of people from all over the United States and world.[citation needed] Citrus production was important to the region's development in the earlier part of the 20th century.[19]HP G61-323CA Laptop Keyboard While the New York metropolitan area is presently the most populous metropolitan area in the United States, it has been predicted in the past that Greater Los Angeles will eventually surpass Greater New York in population.[citation needed] Whether this will happen is yet to be seen, but past predictions on this event have been off the mark. A 1966 article in Time predicted Greater Los Angeles would surpass New York by 1975, ASUS X53S Laptop Keyboard and that by 1990, would reach close to the 19 million mark.[20] But the article's flawed definition of Greater Los Angeles included San

ACER Aspire 5336 Laptop Keyboard As of 2009, the New York metropolitan area had a population of 22.2 million compared to the Greater Los Angeles Area's 18.7 million, about a 3.56 million persons difference.[22] Percentage growth, however, has been higher in Greater Los Angeles over the past few decades than in Greater New York. Greater Los Angeles is known for its expansive transportation network. Most notable is its extensive highway system. The area is a junction for numerous interstates coming from the north, east, and south and contains the three principal north-south highways in California: Interstate 5, U.S. Route 101, andCalifornia State Route 1.
