Motorola, Inc. (pronounced /mo?t??ro?l?/) was an American-based, multinational, telecommunications company based in Schaumburg, Illinois, which was split into two independent public companies, Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions on January 4, 2011 after having lost $4.3 billion from 2007 to 2009 HP 448007-001 battery .
Motorola Solutions is generally considered to be the direct successor to Motorola, Inc., as the reorganization was structured with Motorola Mobility being spunoff.
Motorola designed and sold wireless network infrastructure equipment such as cellular transmission base stations and signal amplifiers HP Pavilion DV7 battery .
Motorola's home and broadcast network products included set-top boxes, digital video recorders, and network equipment used to enable video broadcasting, computer telephony, and high-definition television HP DV6-1120SA battery .
Its business and government customers consisted mainly of wireless voice and broadband systems used to build private networks and public safety communications systems like Astro and Dimetra. These businesses are now part of Motorola Solutions.
Motorola's wireless telephone handset division was a pioneer in cellular phones HP DV6-1210SA battery .
Known as the Personal Communication Section (PCS) prior to 2004, it pioneered the flip phone with the StarTAC in the mid-1990s, and it enjoyed a resurgence with the RAZR in the mid-2000s before losing significant market share. Lately it has focused on smartphones using Google's open-source Android mobile operating system Compaq CQ50 battery .
The first phone to use the newest version of Google's open source OS, Android 2.0, was released on November 2, 2009 as the Motorola Droid (the GSM version launched a month later, in Europe, as the Motorola Milestone). The handset division has since then been spun off into the independent Motorola Mobility HP Pavilion DV8 battery .
Motorola started in Chicago, Illinois as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation (at 847 West Harrison Street) in 1928, with its first product being a battery eliminator Sony VGP-BPS13 battery .
Paul Galvin purchased the patents to the automotive radio and acquired the rights to the trade name Motorola ("motor" and "Victrola") from William Lear. The name Motorola was adopted in 1930, and the word has been used as a trademark since the 1930s HP DV9700 battery .
Many of Motorola's products have been radio-related, starting with a battery eliminator for radios, through the first walkie-talkie in the world in 1940, defenseelectronics, cellular infrastructure equipment, and mobile phone manufacturing Compaq CQ35-100 battery .
In the same year, the company built its research and development program with Dan Noble, a pioneer in FM radio and semiconductor technologies joined the company as director of research.
In 1943, Motorola went public and in 1947, the name changed to its present name Sony VGP-BPS11 battery .
At this time, Motorola's main business was producing and selling televisions and radios. Motorola produced the hand-held AM SCR-536 radio during World War II which was vital to allied communication HP Pavilion DV6-1223EO Battery .
In 1952, Motorola opened its first international subsidiary in Toronto, Canada to produce radios and televisions. In 1953, Motorola established the Motorola Foundation to support leading universities in the United States Sony Vaio VGN-CR190E/L Battery .
In 1955, years after Motorola started its research and development laboratory in Phoenix, Arizona to research new solid-state technology, Motorola introduced the world's first commercial high-power germanium-based transistor. The present "batwing" logo was also introduced in 1955 (having been designed by Zeke Ziner in late 1954) Sony VGN-CR11M Battery .
Beginning in 1958 with Explorer 1, Motorola provided radio equipment for most NASA space-flights for decades including during the 1969 moon landing. A year later, it established a subsidiary to conduct licensing and manufacturing for international markets.
In 1960, Motorola introduced the world's first "large-screen" (19-inch), transistorized, cordless portable television Sony VGN-NR11Z Battery .
In 1963, Motorola, which had very successfully begun making televisions in 1947 introduced the world's first truly rectangular color TV picture tube which quickly became the industry standard.
In 1969, Neil Armstrong spoke the famous words "one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" from the Moon on a Motorola Radio Sony VGN-NR11S Battery .
In 1973, Motorola Demonstrates Portable Telephone to be Available for Public Use by 1976.
In 1974, Motorola sold its television business to the Japan-based parent company of Panasonic.
In 1976, Motorola moved to its present headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois Sony VGN-NR110E Battery .
In September 1983, the firm made history when the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the DynaTAC 8000X telephone, the world's first commercial cellular device. By 1998, cellphones accounted for two thirds of Motorola's gross revenue Sony VGN-NR110E/T Battery .
The company was also strong in semiconductor technology, including integrated circuits used in computers. In particular, it is well known for the 6800 family and 68000 family of microprocessors used in Atari ST, Commodore Amiga, Color Computer, and Apple Macintosh personal computers. The PowerPC family was developed with IBM and in a partnership with Apple (known as the AIM alliance) Sony VGN-NR110E/S Battery .
Motorola also has a diverse line of communication products, including satellite systems, digital cable boxes and modems.
In 1986, Motorola invented the Six Sigma quality improvement process. This became a global standard. In 1990, General Instrument Corporation, which was later acquired by Motorola, proposed the first all-digital HDTV standard Sony VGN-NR110E/W Battery .
In the same year, the company introduced the Bravo numeric pager which became the world's best-selling pager.
In 1991, Motorola demonstrated the world's first working-prototype digital cellular system and phones using GSM standard in Hanover, Germany Sony VGN-CR11SR Battery
In 1994, Motorola introduced the world's first commercial digital radio system that combined paging, data and cellular communications and voice dispatch in a single radio network and handset . In 1995 Motorola introduced the world's first two-waypager which allowed users to receive text messages and e-mail and reply with a standard response Sony VGN-CR11Z Battery .
In 1998, Motorola was overtaken by Nokia as the world's biggest seller of mobile phone handsets.
On September 15, 1999, Motorola announced it would buy General Instrument in an $11 billion stock swap. General Instrument had long been the No. 1 cable TV equipment provider, supplying cable operators with end-to-end hybrid fiber coax cable solutions Sony VGN-CR11S Battery .
This meant that GI offers all cable TV transmission network components from the head-end to the fiber optic transmission nodes to the cable set-top boxes, now at the availability of Motorola.
In June 2000, Motorola and Cisco supplied the world's first commercial GPRS cellular network to BT Cellnet in the United Kingdom. The world's first GPRS cell phone was also developed by Motorola Sony VGN-CR11M Battery .
In 2002, Motorola introduced the world's first wireless cable modem gateway which combined a high-speed cable modem router with an ethernet switch and wireless home gateway.
In 2003, Motorola introduced the world's first handset to combine a Linux operating system and Java technology with "full PDA functionality" Sony VGN-CR11E Battery .
In June 2006, Motorola acquired the world-class software platform (AJAR) developed by the British company TTP Communications plc.
In 2006, the firm announced a music subscription service named iRadio. The technology came after a break in a partnership with Apple Computer (which in 2005 had produced an iTunes compatible cell phone ROKR E1, and most recently, mid 2007, its own iPhone) Sony VGN-CR21E Battery .
iRadio has many similarities with existing satellite radio services (such as Sirius and XM Radio) by offering live streams of commercial-free music content. Unlike satellite services, however, iRadio content will be downloaded via a broadband internet connection Sony VGN-CR21S Battery .
As of 2008, iRadio has not been commercially released and no further information is available.
In 2007, Motorola acquired Symbol Technologies, Inc. to provide products and systems for enterprise mobility solutions, including rugged mobile computing, advanced data capture and radio frequency identification (RFID) Sony VGN-CR21Z Battery .
Motorola creates numerous products for use by the government, public safety officials, business installments, and the general public. These products include cell phones, laptops, computer processors, and radio communication devices. The Motorola RAZR line has sold over 120 million units bringing the company to the number two mobile phone slot in 2005 Sony VGN-CR21SR Battery .
Since the 1950s, used Motorola radio equipment has been popular with amateur radio ("ham") operators. Known as "Ma Batwings," Motorola has provided little to no support to hobbyists, who keep using these radios for years or even decades after they were taken out of production Sony VGN-CR31SR Battery

Motorola's handset division recorded a loss of US$1.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2007, while the company as a whole earned $100 million during that quarter. It lost several key executives to rivals, and the web site TrustedReviews called the company's products repetitive and uninnovative Sony VGN-CR41E Battery .
Motorola laid off 3,500 workers in January 2008, followed by a further 4,000 job cuts in June and another 20% cut of its research division a few days later. In July 2008 a large number of executives left Motorola to work on Apple Inc.'s iPhone. The company's handset division was also put on offer for sale Sony VGN-CR41SR Battery .
Also that month, analyst Mark McKechnie from American Technology Research said that Motorola "would be lucky to fetch $500 million" for selling its handset business. Analyst Richard Windsor said that Motorola might have to pay someone to take the division off the company's hands, and that Motorola may even exit the handset market altogether Sony VGN-CR42ZR Battery .
Its global market share has been on the decline; from 18.4% of the market in 2007 the company had a share of just 6.0% by Q1 2009, but at last Motorola scored a profit of $26 million in Q2 and showed an increase of 12% in stocks for the first time after losses in many quarters Sony VGN-CR42Z Battery .
During the second quarter of 2010, the company reported a profit of $162 million, which compared very favorably to the $26 million earned for the same period last year. Its Mobile Devices division reported, for the first time in years, earnings of $87 million Sony VGN-CR42S Battery .
Television and radio manufacturing
In 1974, Motorola divested itself of its television and radio-manufacturing division, which included the popular Quasar brand of electronics. This division was acquired by Matsushita, already well-known under its Panasonic brand in North America, where it was looking to expand Sony VGN-CR42E Battery .
Motorola developed the first truly global communication network using a set of 66 satellites. The business ambitions behind this project and the need for raising venture capital to fund the project led to the creation of the Iridium company in the late 1990s Sony Vaio VGN-CR11S/L Battery .
While the technology was proven to work, Iridium failed to attract sufficient customers and it filed for bankruptcy in 1999. Obligations to Motorola and loss of expected revenue caused Motorola to spin off the ON Semiconductor (ONNN) business August 4, 1999, raising for Motorola about $1.1 billion Sony Vaio VGN-CR190E/P Battery .
Motorola manufactured two satellite phone handsets for this network - the 9500 and 9505 as well as transceiver units. Some of these are still in production by an OEM but sold under the Iridium brand.
Government and defense
Further declines in business during 2000 and 2001 caused Motorola to spin off its government and defense business to General Dynamics Sony Vaio VGN-CR190E/R Battery .
The business deal closed September 2001. Thus GD Decision Systems was formed (and later merged with General Dynamics C4 Systems) from Motorola's Integrated Information Systems Group Sony Vaio VGN-CR190E/W Battery .
On August 4, 1999 Motorola, Inc.'s Semiconductor Components Group, manufacturing Motorola's discrete, standard analog and standard logic devices was spun-off, recapitalized and established as an independent company named ON Semiconductor Sony Vaio VGN-CR21/B Battery .
On October 16, 2003, Motorola announced that it would spin off its Semiconductor Products Sector into a separate company called Freescale Semiconductor, Inc.. The new company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on July 16 of the following year Sony Vaio VGN-CR21E/L Battery .
In July, 2006 Motorola completed the sale of its automotive business to Continental AG. Motorola’s automotive unit had annual sales of $1.6 billion (€1.33 billion) and employed 4,500 Sony Vaio VGN-CR21E/P Battery .
The divisions products included telematics systems used for vehicle navigation and safety services, engine and transmission control electronics, vehicle control, electronics and sensors used in steering, braking, and power doors and power windows.
In October, 2008, Motorola agreed to sell its Biometrics business to Safran, a French defense firm. Motorola's biometric business unit was headquartered in Anaheim, Calif. The deal is expected to close in Q1, 2009 Sony Vaio VGN-CR21S/L Battery .
On March 26, 2008, Motorola's board of directors approved a split into two different publicly traded companies. This came after talk of selling the handset division to another corporation Sony Vaio VGN-CR21S/P Battery .
These new companies would comprise the business units of the current Motorola Mobile Devices and Motorola Broadband & Mobility Solutions. Originally it was expected that this action would be approved by regulatory bodies and complete by mid-2009, but the split was indefinitely delayed due to company restructuring problems and the 2008-2009 extreme economic downturn Sony Vaio VGN-CR21S/W Battery .
On February 11, 2010, Motorola announced its separation into two independent, publicly traded companies, effective Q1 2011. The official spilt occurred at around 12:00 pm EST on January 4, 2011. The two new companies are called Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MMI; cell phone and cable television equipment company) and Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI Sony Vaio VGN-CR21Z/N Battery ;
Government and Enterprise Business). Motorola Solutions is generally considered to be the direct successor to Motorola, Inc., as the reorganization was structured with Motorola Mobility being spunoff.
The Six Sigma quality system was developed at Motorola even though it became best known through its use by General Electric Sony Vaio VGN-CR21Z/R Battery .
It was created by engineer Bill Smith, under the direction of Bob Galvin(son of founder Paul Galvin) when he was running the company. Motorola University is one of many places that provide Six Sigma training.
Motorola, Inc., along with the Arizona Water Co. has been identified as the sources of trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination that took place in Scottsdale, Arizona Sony Vaio VGN-CR220E/R Battery .
The malfunction led to a ban on the use of water that lasted three days and affected almost 5000 people in the area. Motorola was found to be the main source of the TCE, an industrial solvent that is thought to cause cancer. The TCE contamination was caused by a faulty blower on an air stripping tower that was used to take TCE from the water Sony Vaio VGN-CR23/B Battery ,
and Motorola has attributed the situation to operator error.
Motorola ranks 6th out of 18 leading electronics manufacturers in Greenpeace’s Guide to Greener Electronics of October 2010 (the company shares 6th place with its competitors Panasonic and Nokia) Sony Vaio VGN-CR23/P Battery .
Motorola scores relatively well on the chemicals criteria and has a goal to eliminate PVC vinyl plastic and brominated flame retardants (BFRs), though only in mobile devices and not in all its products introduced after 2010, despite the fact that Sony Ericsson and Nokia are already there Sony Vaio VGN-CR23/R Battery .
All of its mobile phones are now PVC-free and it has two PVC and BFR-free mobile phones, the A45 ECO and the GRASP; all chargers are also free from PVC and BFRs.
The company is also increasing the proportion of recycled materials that is used in its products Sony Vaio VGN-CR23/L Battery .
For example the housing for the MOTO™ W233 Renew and MOTOCUBO A45 Eco mobile phones contains plastic from post-consumer recycled water cooler bottles. According to the company’s information all of Motorola’s newly designed chargers meet the current Energy Star requirements and exceed the requirements for standby/ no-load modes by at least 67% HP Pavilion DM3 battery.
Motorola sponsored Scottish Premier League club Motherwell F.C. for 11 years. This long term deal ended after the company started to reduce its manufacturing operations in Scotland. The club also sponsored Livingston F.C. between 1998-2002. The company also had a plant on the edge of the town HP Pavilion DM4 battery .
However, this closed down at the same time as their sponsorship with the club ended. The South Stand at Livingston's Almondvale Stadium, was named after the company, during their time of sponsorship. The company also sponsored a cycling team that counted Lance Armstrong amongst its members. Motorola is also a large sponsor of Danica Patrick, David Beckham, and Fergie. HP Pavilion DV6-1210SA battery
It also Sponsored The Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League from 2004-2007.
Robby Gordon was sponsored by Motorola in 2007 and 2008. Motorola is on Robby's car in NASCAR 07 and NASCAR 08 Dell N3010 battery
Motorola RAZR (pronounced /?re?z?r/ "razor") is a series of clamshell mobile camera phones by Motorola. They were first developed in July 2003 and introduced in the fourth quarter of 2004, with sales starting the following year Dell Inspiron N4010 battery .
Because of its striking appearance and thin profile, it was initially marketed as an exclusive fashion phone, but within a year its price was lowered and it was wildly successful selling over 50 million units by July 2006, making it the most popular clamshell phone at the time Dell INSPIRON 9100 battery .
Over the RAZR's four-year run, Motorola sold more than 110 million units, boosting its position to second place in the handheld market behind Nokia. PC World put the RAZR at #12 in The 50 Greatest Gadgets of the Past 50 Years.
The RAZR series was marketed until July 2007, when the succeeding Motorola RAZR2 series was released Dell XPS 1340 battery .
Marketed as a more sleek and more stable design of the RAZR, the RAZR2 included more features, improved telephone audio quality, and a touch sensitive external screen. The new models were the V8, the V9, and the V9m. However, the RAZR2 sales were only half of the original in the same period Dell Inspiron 1464 battery .
Motorola relied too long upon the RAZR and its derivatives,[ being slow to develop new products in the growing market for feature-rich touchscreen and 3G phones, so the RAZR's appeal declined while offerings from rivals such as the LG Chocolate, BlackBerry Dell Inspiron 1764 battery ,
and iPhone captured consumer attention, and Motorola eventually dropped behind Samsung and LG in market share for mobile phones. Motorola's strategy of grabbing market share by selling tens of millions of RAZRs led to them slashing prices, cutting into margins which resulted in heavy losses in the cellular division Dell Inspiron 1564 battery
The team behind the RAZR V3 phone put together a number of design choices that set the device apart from the competition. The phone had the thinnest profile at the time on a clamshell set, sported an electroluminescent keypad made out of a single metal wafer and used an industry standard mini USB port for data Dell Inspiron 1720 battery .
battery charger and headphones, all in an aluminum body with an external glass screen.
Complaints were made about dust accumulating between the V3's plastic screen and LCD glass, possibly through an external side button. Access to the dust requires peeling off the plastic cover, usually followed by a replacement cover Dell Inspiron Mini 12 battery .
Matte Black version
A black version was produced for distribution in the 77th Academy Awards gift bags, and was released in early May 2005. While distribution was initially limited to specific carriers in North America, the black V3 was widely available elsewhere Dell LATITUDE D800 battery .
Hot Pink versions
The first pink version was released in October 2005, and as of June 2006, was available in the USA from T-Mobile (as RAZR V3 Magenta, after the T-Mobile—and its parent, Deutsche Telekom's—corporate color, but called RAZR V3 Pink in other countries, including other T-Mobile networks) Dell Inspiron 6400 AC Adapter ,
Verizon, Cingular Wireless, Suncom Wireless, Cellular One from Dobson Cellular Systems (each in a different shade). It was available in Canada from Bell, Rogers Wireless and Telus, and in the United Kingdom from T-Mobile and the Carphone Warehouse. $25 of sales from the Rogers pink V3 went to Rethink Breast Cancer. It was also available in all Movistar-serviced countries and Claro (Telcel)SONY VAIO VGN-FWZJ/H Battery .
Miami Ink Collection
As of 30 October 2006 through T-Mobile in the United States, Motorola offered a version with laser-etched tattoo-inspired designs created by Ami Jamesof the TLC reality television show, Miami Ink. The phones are standard V3r's,but aesthetically different because of the tattoo design on the phone SONY VAIO VGN-FW41M/H Battery .
The successor to the RAZR is the RAZR V3i. It addresses some of the faults of the original RAZR V3 including a better (1.23 megapixel) camera with 8x digital zoom, an improved external and internal display also support for microSD cards of up to 1GB. V3i is functionally very close to Motorola V635model SONY VAIO VGN-FW37J Battery .
The V3i comes in two versions: one with iTunes and one with Motorola's Digital Audio Player (DAP). The iTunes version of the phone has a 50 or 100 song limit restriction ("cap") depending on where the phone model was made. The Motorola DAP does not suffer from this cap SONY VAIO VGN-FW90NS Battery ;
however, it takes considerably longer time to load and uses the V3's battery at a much faster rate than iTunes does . The phone's looks have also been subtly changed. It was announced on 8 December 2005 that Motorola had teamed up with Dolce & Gabbana to produce a Special Edition Gold RAZR V3t SONY VAIO VGN-FW83XS Battery .
Only 1,000 of these have been made and sold for a premium price.
On 1 June 2006, Motorola and Dolce & Gabbana once again released their limited edition gold phone. This model includes a D&G cell phone holder, a signature leather pouch, Bluetooth headphone, and FM earphones SONY VAIO VGN-FW30B Battery .
It is available from all major Motorola retailers and select D&G boutiques.
The V3i is available in the following colors:
- Silver Quartz (main color) SONY VAIO VGN-AW41MF/H Battery
- Gunmetal Grey
- Gold Plate (special edition DG version only, see above)
- Dark Blue
- Violet SONY VAIO VGN-AW41MF Battery
- Black for (PRODUCT)RED (special edition to tie in with the (PRODUCT) RED initiative)
- Chrome Green
- Chrome Purple SONY VAIO VGN-AW41JF/H Battery
- Celery (some companies call it Lime Green instead)
The Motorola RAZR V3i was released to most worldwide markets in the Q4 of 2005–2006. In the U.S. the phone was released through Cingular Wireless on 6 September 2006, with a new activation price of $299, while T-Mobile released the Dolce & Gabbana V3i exclusively in the United States. SONY VAIO VGN-FW31Z Battery
The V3r and V3t are models sold by T-Mobile, AT&T (formerly Cingular), and Canadian cellular services such as Rogers Wireless. These models are virtually identical to the V3 and V3i, except they use Motorola's Digital Audio Player instead of iTunes for music playback SONY VAIO VGN-FW31M Battery .
T-Mobile's V3r offers a Voice Notes feature which permits forwarding your audio recordings to voicemail as the only storage method. However, a publicly available SEEM edit permits users to enable the hidden Voice Records feature. Voice Records allows you to save voice recordings locally to phone memory SONY VAIO VGN-FW31B Battery .
Currently, Voice Records is limited to less than two minutes of audio recording and stores the resulting records as .avr format files on the a partition within phone memory. In contrast, currently available SEEM edits can expand the maximum size of video recordingsSONY VAIO VGN-FW31E Battery .
T-Mobile V3t phone memory is 10.0MB total, including all system files. This space is divided unevenly into a and c partitions. Memory on partition a is larger than 2MB and contains system files, including some of the branding images for the phone carrier SONY VAIO VGN-FW31J Battery .
Partition a also contains the avr structure for the hidden Voice Records feature. Partition c is larger than 5.5MB and stores user data, including images, sounds, videos, text notes, calendar entries, phone book entries, Java applets and web cache. V3r and V3t phones sold by T-Mobile come equipped with Java-based software that supports T-Mobile's "MyFaves" rate plan Sony VGP-BPS21 Battery .
Publicly available third party tools can remove this Java software and other system or locked files to free memory for other uses.
Canada's Rogers Wireless also carries them for a reduced price compared to the original Razrs Sony VGP-BPS21A Battery .
The V3im is the iTunes version of the RAZR V3i available in the UK market with a 100 song cap.
Another version of this phone was released in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) on 1 June 2005. This version has the similar physical appearance as the original V3 but instead of GSM, it is a CDMA phone for SK Telecom Sony VGP-BPS21/S Battery .
It is the first CDMA version of the RAZR without the expandable memory, Bluetooth and SIM card, since Motorola Korea's system was able to produce its own model before worldwide GSM format release. It has a 1.3 megapixel camera, video recording, 80MB of internal memory and a variety of UI features Sony VGP-BPS21A/B Battery ,
such as mobile blog, Yoga graphic book, Diet diary and lotterynumber generator for Wellness theme. It also comes in colors other than those mentioned above. Black, pink, and lime models are seen around Korea. In 8 February 2006 Motorola Korea released its own slide-phone model for the RAZR named Z model name MS600 SONY VGP-BPS21 Battery .
Unlike most other versions, the MS500 version is packaged with a charging dock and has three metal terminals on the back side immediately under the battery cover.
Also, as the add-on to the MS600, MS500 Lime RAZR has been in circulation in South Korea since October 2006 along with the Motorola KRZR Black and Motorola KRZR Fire (Red) SONY VGP-BPS21A Battery .
The RAZR V3re (also known as V3_06) is a GSM model that has been updated to support EDGE and Crystal Talk technology. It is nearly identical to the original V3, having no memory card slot and with a VGA 4x zoom camera SONY VGP-BPS21B Battery .
It can be identified by a slightly larger notch under the Motorola logo when closed, ablack matte Motorola logo in the battery cover instead the metallic silver logo in the V3 and a software version starting with R3442A. It is available in North America from T-Mobile, AT&T in the US, Rogers/Fido in Canada and Vivo in Brazil (using both 850 MHz frequency and 1800 MHz. This one with the old-named Telemig Celular, a Vivo company) SONY VGP-BPS21/S Battery
On 21 November 2005, a CDMA2000 version of the RAZR, known as the RAZR V3c, became available to Alltel and SaskTel users. Verizon Wireless followed suit on 7 December 2005 SONY VGP-BPS21A/B Battery .
Unlike models for Alltel and other carriers, Verizon's V3c features a proprietary user interface and disables, in software, Bluetooth file transfer capabilities (called OBEX). (Although OBEX is supported in Verizon's V3c firmware version .02, and version .04 if flash-upgraded directly from .02, skipping any install of .03.) SONY VGP-BPS13/Q Battery
In January 2006, Canadian Telus, Bell Mobility and Aliant Mobility, Venezuelan carriers Movistar andMovilnet, and Brazilian Vivo began carrying the V3c. In April 2006 Cricket Communications began selling the V3c. The handset was also made available for Metro PCS. The RAZR V3c supports CDMA 2000 1xRTT and 1xEV-DO third generation wireless technologies SONY VGP-BPS13/Q Battery .
This is the technology Verizon Wireless uses to provide their V CAST multimedia service. The coverage of this feature, however, may not be available everywhere. US Cellular and Alaska Communications Systems, Alaska's CDMA provider, also carry the V3c. It also has approximately 41.2 MB of internal memory, although only about 36 MB are available for use. SONY VGP-BPS13A/Q Battery
The V3c does not support expansion with a memory card.
The original version of the V3c was charcoal gray, and a light pink version called Satin Pink (different from the GSM Magenta/Pink and the AT&T Cotton Candy versions) was released by Verizon Wireless in January 2006. Telus Mobility, Bell, Aliant, and Vivo also carry pink versions of the V3c SONY VGP-BPS13A/Q Battery .
V3m is a CDMA version of the RAZR. As an upgrade to the V3c, it features a microSD card slot for up to 2 GB of memory expansion, a longer lasting battery, and 40MB of internal memory Toshiba Satellite M300 Battery .
The V3m came in silver, pink and red although the original release as well as models that used to be available on the Sprint CDMA network featured the gunmetal gray color of the V3c. For a limited time Alltel and US Cellular offered a Fire Red color. This model is not available in the UK as they use GSM, not CDMA, although the V3x is on sale there Toshiba Satellite 1200 Battery .
Due to many Sprint customers complaining about less than expected battery life, Motorola offered free high-capacity batteries to Sprint customers who contact Motorola's customer service line with battery life issues Toshiba Satellite A200 Battery .
Verizon Wireless version
Verizon Wireless disabled certain features on the V3m including the ability to transfer data files to and from the phone via Bluetooth (a specific protocol called OBEX).Verizon has also blocked the transfer of most data over USB, such as ringtones Sony VGP-BPS21 battery .
These phones also run Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW), which signs each application to the phones Electronic Serial Number, or ESN, thus preventing the use of free applications. The equivalent models offered by competitors (such as the V3t by T-Mobile) still retain these features Sony VGP-BPS14 battery .
The V3m on Verizon will play .WMA formatted music files placed in the my_music directory of the removable memory chip, but although the telephone with accept a 2 GB memory chip, only a portion ( ~ 600 Mbytes) can be accessed by the music player Sony VGP-BPL8 battery .
Stereo headphone playback can be achieved with a miniature USB to 3.5 mm phone jack adapter containing the appropriate interface circuitry; adapters designed for hands-free handset operation may not work.
Verizon also installs their own user interface instead of the default Motorola interface that they used to use in the past Sony VGP-BPS22 battery .
This has led to many Verizon Wireless users to resort to using their own artificial means of reverting their phones back to an original Motorola condition, or to that of a Verizon phone that has some of the disabled features enabled.A newer Verizon version of the phone has been upgraded and features limitless video capture Sony VGP-BPS11 battery ,
easier laid out menu system and the ability to customize the external screen. The phone is still unable to sync to a computer via USB cable for anything other than charging, unless a software such as Bitpim is used to access files Sony VGP-BPS9 battery .
Partnering with Motorola, US Cellular and Sprint released a special Product Red RAZR and Bluetooth H500 headset to help support Global Fund programs which positively impact the lives of women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa. Also in the UK there is a Product Red V3i, SLVR, and Bluetooth H3 headset Sony VGP-BPS10 battery .
The RAZR VE20 is the newest CDMA model of RAZR. It takes the features of the RAZR² V9m and makes it more affordable for consumers. Its rounded clamshell body is almost as thin as the RAZR V3m. it features a QVGA main display, outer display with virtual touch keys, 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, and a microSD memory card slot up to 8Gb Toshiba PA3399U-2BRS battery .
Announced in March 2005 , the RAZR V3x was formerly known as the Motorola V1150. Externally, it appears to be a larger RAZR V3, albeit with enhancements such as a 2.0 Megapixel camera. Internally, it is quite different, utilizing a different microprocessor, chipset, an Nvidia GoForce 4200 GPU, and radio ICs Toshiba Satellite T4900 Battery .
As a 3G product, its feature set is closer to that of phones such as the Motorola V980, e.g., two cameras instead of the single camera typical on GSM or CDMA products. However one of the main attractions of the RAZR V3, the fact that it is very thin, is no longer present in the V3x Toshiba Satellite L305 Battery ;
although it is the smallest phone available in the UK on the "3" network, compared to other clamshells, it is only an average-sized phone. It won the "Best 3GSM handset" at the 2006 3GSM World Congress.
In Japan, a 3G(W-CDMA) NTT DoCoMo version of the V3x was released in late August 2006. This version has IrDA SONY VGN -FZ210CE Battery .
Announced in July 2006, the V3xx is a 3G Category 5/6 (3.6 Mbit/s) HSDPA and EDGE supported handset. It is extremely similar in appearance to the compact V3i design, but incorporates an improved feature set with a 1.3 megapixel camera in place of the 1.23 megapixel, 50 MB of internal memory, support for microSD and Bluetooth A2DP Dell Precision M70 Battery .
Like the V3x, it is also equipped with a secondary screen and a higher resolution 240x320 pixel (QVGA) main screen. The V3xx was made available for purchase internationally on the Three network in November 2006, and is now available on AT&T (formerly Cingular) for free with a new 2-year contract Acer Aspire One battery 10400mAh .
The secondary camera is not available in the USA. The built-in GPU, manufactured by Nvidia (model GoForce 4800) is capable of rendering 3D images through OpenGL ES. The phone includes a much faster CPU as well, making the performance of all features, including 3G/Data much more real-time Dell RM791 battery .
(All menuing delays common to the slower V3 platform are gone). With the new CPU available, the V3xx Phone now also includes a fast USB V2.0 for downloading ringtones/images/mp3 files quickly. (older V3's were limited to USB V1.1) Dell Inspiron E1505 battery
Unlike with the V3 and V3i (both of which were quad band GSM and thus worked equally well on any GSM network in the world) the V3xx comes in different variants depending on the local frequency bands used for GSM and UMTS/HSDPA. The North American V3xx is Tri band Dell Studio 1737 battery
(850 MHz/1800 MHz/1900 MHz) GSM and dual band (850 MHz/1900 MHz) UMTS/HSDPA, whereas the version sold in Europe and Asia is tri band (900 MHz/1800 MHz/1900 MHz) GSM and single band (2.1 GHz) UMTS/HSDPA. This is likely due to the need to fit the internal components of the V3xx into a small casing Dell Inspiron 300M Battery
; as of early 2007 global phones that support quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA are considerably bulkier than the V3xx.
NTT DoCoMo version of the V3xx. This version does not have GSM, HSDPA. But it has IrDA Dell Latitude E4200 Battery .
The RAZR maxx was a new 3G HSDPA and EDGE handset predated by the RAZR V3x. Initially known as the "maxx V6," it was released in Europe by the end of 2006. Additionally Motorola had released pictures on its website of the Verizon version Dell Latitude E5400 Battery .
The original version has a 2.0 Megapixel camera with LED flash, a large 2.2-inch (56 mm) screen with 240x320 QVGA display (like the V3xx) and 50 megabytes of internal storage. While gaining a significantly improved featureset, it will maintain the same thin profile of the original RAZR V3 Sony VGN-FW139E/H battery .
Key to its design are a glass fascia with external touch-sensitive controls for MP3s.
This phone was available in Australia from Telstra on their 850 MHz Next G network.
The Verizon Wireless version became available on 24 April 2007. Sony VGN-FW11M Battery
The Verizon Wireless version, the RAZR maxx Ve, did not have the second camera on the inside of the phone. Instead, there was a shutter button for focusing and picture taking. The Ve featured Verizon's menu system, but is said to support OBEX profiles, unlike Verizon's current RAZR V3m Sony VGN-FW11S Battery .
Like previous Model MS500, Motorola Korea Announce its Korean version of WCDMA RAZR HSDPA, it will upgrade its screen to 2.2 inch TFT QVGA, 1.3 megapixel camera with bluetooth and external memory. model will feature different color pattern compare to previous MS500, expecting to hit Korean market by late Feb.2009 Dell Inspiron Mini 10 Battery .
The RAZR has been said to be the "iPod" of mobile phones . Being the slimmest phone during its release in 2004, it easily stood out amongst other phone models. It has also been one of the most popular mobile phones since its first release, until being surpassed by the iPhone 3G in November 2008, Dell Latitude D620 Battery
having been spotted in the hands of celebrities and businessmen alike, it is frequently seen in movies and TV shows and is still being used as of January 2009 by the former Dutch Prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende. It is also a token piece in the popular modernized board game, Monopoly Here & Now Dell Latitude D830 Battery .
In popular culture
Since its release the RAZR has become identified as a 'fashion' product and an iconic cell phone. The RAZR has since been used in several television shows and featured in several movies Toshiba Satellite M60 battery .
One notable occasion was the season three finale of the TV series Lost, in which a character's usage of a RAZR is the viewer's first hint that scenes seemingly happening in the past are actually happening in the future, as the series' characters were stranded on an island prior to the RAZR's release Dell Studio 1457 Battery
(The phone in the episode is actually a Motorola KRZR K1m). Contestants on the NBC adventure reality show "Treasure Hunters" were given RAZRs for communication with the host and each other throughout the season. The Product Red edition of the RAZR was launched by Oprah and Bono for charity Dell Studio 1450 Battery .
The popularity of RAZR in the United States was never replicated worldwide. While at first successful as a fashion phone abroad, its newer and cheaper models never became iconic Dell Inspiron 1320n Battery .

The Droid had been publicized under the codenames Sholes and Tao and the model number A855. In Latin America and Europe, the model number is A853 (Milestone).
Verizon explicitly promoted the Droid as an Apple iPhone-alternative SONY VGP-BPS13/S Battery .
Launched on October 17, 2009 TV spots and an associated website made "entertainingly combative" claims listing features lacking on the iPhone, e.g. "iDon't multitask", only mentioning the name of the Droid in the final frame, reading "Droid Does". At the official launch event on October 28 SONY VGP-BPS8 Battery
2009 Verizon's Chief Marketing Officer John Stratton described the campaign as a spoof of Apple's iPhone ads, intended to "wake up the market."
The marketing for the American launch included "Droid Does Times Square SONY VAIO VGN-FZ38M Battery .

Control of the billboards was available in Times Square or via the "Droid Does" website.
The November 6, 2009 release date of the Droid came just under a month after Verizon and Google announced that they had entered into an agreement to jointly develop wireless devices based on the Android mobile platform SONY VAIO VGN-FZ31M Battery .
Verizon said at the time that it planned to have two Android-based handsets on the market by year-end with more to come in 2010. Android 2.1 update
On February 8, 2010, Motorola announced via Facebook that the Droid update would begin rolling out later that same week SONY VAIO VGN-FZ480E Battery .
Details were later released via Motorola's official forums. However, the details about the update were later retracted, and unclear information from Motorola and Verizon Wireless caused confusion among many, and technology news websites speculated the update would happen even later in 2010 SONY VAIO VGN-FZ460E Battery .
As an attempt to clear confusion, Motorola released a chart of dates stating when each of their Android devices would be updated to Android 2.1, but this only added to the issues because they said the update would happen "soon", rather than offering a concrete time frame SONY VAIO VGN-FZ340E Battery .
However, on March 17, 2010, Verizon Wireless announced that they would issue the Android 2.1 "ESE53" update over-the-air, beginning March 18 to a small test group, and more users would see the update later, into the following week SONY VAIO VGN-FZ220E Battery .
But screenshots from Verizon Wireless documents showed that a last minute software bug was found, and the update was delayed once again, with no new roll out date determined.
The new news from Verizon Wireless provided official information about the update and what it entailed, including "Pinch-to-zoomSONY VAIO VGN-FZ180E Battery .
..available when using the browser, Gallery, and Google Maps", a weather and news app/widget including "information you want from the Web...weekly and hourly weather forecasts based on your location, and news headlines", voice-to-text wherever there are text boxes, "New Gallery application with 3D layout" Sony VAIO VGN-NR11Z/T Battery ,
and Live Wallpapers "offer[ing] richer animated, interactive backgrounds on the home screen", as well as other, more minor upgrades. However, the update did not include the addition of two more home screens currently available on the Nexus One, another Android 2.1 device Sony VAIO VGN-NR11M/S Battery .
The 2.1 update roll out began on March 30, 2010. The 2.2 update is being released the week of August 2, 2010.
Android 2.2 update
After some apparent discussion by Motorola over whether they would provide an Android 2.2 Froyo upgrade for the Droid and Milestone, it was confirmed that the Droid would get the upgrade, and a staggered roll out began Sony VAIO VGN-NR11Z/S Battery .
This roll out began on August 3, 2010 and updates the phone to Android 2.2 build number FRG01B. Another update for the Droid began on August 24, 2010, and it included some minor bug fixes. This update's build number is FRG22D. A third update was released on December 6, 2010, with a version number of 2.2.1 and a build of FRG83D Sony VAIO VGN-NR11S/S Battery .
A fourth update was released on March 9, 2011, with a version number of 2.2.2 and a build of FRG83G. The Motorola support page reported the Milestone version would get an update to Android 2.2 in the Q1 2011, and indeed on March 15th an update was made available Sony VAIO VGN-FW21E Battery .
Motorola warn and some users confirm that the update will slow the operation of the phone.
The Motorola Droid was successfully "rooted" (manipulated to provide superuser access) on December 8, 2009 SONY VAIO VGN-NR11Z/S Battery .This allowed removing sponsored/pay-to-use applets (Amazon, Verizon Visual Voice Mail, etc.), installing and launching custom so
ftware, and root access on the phone using a terminal emulator. There is also a separate unofficial Android Market that allows easy installation of software solely for rooted Droids. The unofficial market is accessed and searched through the regular Market interface, after further modding, alongside official Market apps SONY VAIO VGN-NR11M/S Battery
On June 5, 2010, a leaked Android 2.2 ROM was given to the public for those with superuser access. It includes a new home launcher, Flash 10.1 support, new homescreen widgets, an updated Market, a JIT compiler for a faster system, as well as new aesthetic changes SONY VAIO VGN-NR11S/S Battery
The quad-band GSM/UMTS version of the Droid is the Motorola Milestone. While the phone's internal hardware (besides cellular) is the same, differences include out-of-the-box multi-touchsupport enabled, a trial version of Motorola's MOTONAV service (instead of Droid's US-only Google Maps Navigation) and an 8 GB microSDHC Card, instead of the Droid's 16 GB microSDHC card SONY VAIO VGN-FW21E Battery .
The launch countries for the Motorola Milestone included Germany, Italy and Argentina on November 9, 2009. Other European countries soon followed.
Joining this trend, a new, North American, version of the Motorola Milestone was released in Canada in February 2010 SONY VAIO VGN-FW31J Battery .
This new version supports 3G bands II and V instead of bands I and VIII so it is compatible with Rogers, Bell, and Telus in Canada, and with AT&T and T-Mobile (2G Only) in the US. At this time, Motorola Milestone is only available from Telus. The Milestone is also available in the U.S. from several regional GSM carriers, like Cincinnati Bell SONY VAIO VGN-FW31J Battery .
Unlike the DROID, the Milestone has a bootloader that only allows signed firmware to load. This prevents users from booting custom ROM images not signed by Motorola that have become popular in the Droid modding community. This has caused discontent in the Droid community in markets foreign to the US SONY VAIO VGN-FZ21E Battery .
Whether the disabling of custom boot loaders is due to retailer, carrier, manufacturer, or legal restrictions is unknown and the primary reason(s) may differ in each individual market. It is worth noting, however, that competitor's phones with identical carriers in identical countries largely do not have such restrictions SONY VAIO VGN-FZ18 Battery .
Early in 2011 the community around Milestone ROM-Development and the Polish National BOINC Team initiated AndrOINC to decipher the RSA 1024-bit signature and make customizing possible. The effort remains open, as the attack is brute-force and RSA 1024-bit has never been broken before HP Pavilion DV8000 battery .
The phone was launched in the United Kingdom on Thursday December 10, 2009, as the Motorola Milestone. The exclusive sales outlet for the phone, eXpansys, reported that all stocks of the phone had completely sold out within 3 hours of its debut HP Pavilion DV6000 battery .
The sell-out was considered a major victory for Motorola, which has had little success with its prior Windows Mobile-based phones, and had been counting on Android-based phones for future growth HP Pavilion DV8000 battery .
The phone was launched in the Middle East in 2010, however it included a serious limitation as Google prohibited access to its Android Market application for most of Middle Eastern countries. No reasonable alternative was provided by Google HP Pavilion DV6000 battery .
The Milestone was launched in Hong Kong on December 21, 2009 as the sixth Android device in the region for HKD 4,680 with an 8 GB microSDHC card included. This version is in English but supports Chinese hand writing that originated from the Motorola MING and pinyin input method SONY VAIO VGN-FZ Battery .
While MOTONAV is included, it does not work and is not officially supported. The phone can be updated to Android 2.1 in Q1 2010, the update will also feature a Chinese user interface and more Chinese input methods such as Changjie. Currently users who want to use these input methods need to download 3rd party solutions from the Android Market HP PAVILION DV8000 Battery .
The Milestone launched in India on 30 March 2010, priced at 32,000 INR, approximately US$680.
In July 2010, Motorola launch the phone as the Motorola MOTOROI and became exclusive to CDMA network carrier Iusacell HP PAVILION DV6000 Battery .
The 2.0.1 Update, that fixed the well known camera autofocus bug, that appeared every 24.5 days, was finally released, 2 months after Motorola Droid received the update. HP Pavilion dv8000 battery
The Motorola Milestone update rolled out in the beginning of May 2010, five months after the introduction of Android 2.1.After the update several problems were discovered, but since then firmware 2.1 update 1 has been released, which fixes some of the issues HP Pavilion dv6000 Battery .
Although Motorola claimed, that they have fixed the random MP3 player start problems, they still occur. It is worth noting that these problems affect only some users.
On Saturday, August 21, 2010, Motorola announced that they will also release an upgrade to Android 2.2 for the Motorola Milestone with an initial roll out planned to begin at the end of 2010 Sony VGP-BPL15 battery .
This happened almost a year after the announcement of the Motorola Milestone, and world-wide advertising of Adobe Flash support. At first Motorola was undecided, but they later confirmed the prediction made by Adobe for Flash support. The update to 2.2 was initially postponed until Q4 2010, and then to early Q1 2011, removing the "early" at the end of January Sony VGP-BPS13B/B battery.
The official Android 2.2 Froyo update was released on 16 March 2011 for UK users with a slow roll out to the rest of Europe. As of 20 March, the update is still being rolled out and is unavailable in all countries. Community created ROMs of Android 2.2 (Froyo) and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) have existed for some time, typically based on kernels from leaked updates Sony VGP-BPL9 battery .
The continued postponing of Milestone updates has become known under the term "Motofail" in Central and South America.
By all appearances, it seems that 2.2 is the last official update provided by Motorola for the original Droid. However, CyanogenMod and Peter Alfronso have successfully ported 2.3 Gingerbread to the Droid and is currently in its fourth release candidate Sony VGP-BPS13B/B battery .
On Wednesday, September 1, Motorola announced Milestone 2 which will be available in Europe Q4 2010.
The Droid Pro is an Android-based smartphone manufactured by Motorola and released on November 18, 2010. The device is exclusive to Verizon Wireless in the United States, and is optimized for business users Sony VGP-BPS13A/B battery .
The Droid Pro features a 3.1" capacitive touchscreen paired with a QWERTY keyboard, and a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual LED flash. The smartphone includes global abilities, with customers able to use services in over 220 countries worldwide, 120 of which offer 3G connectivity Sony VGP-BPS13/S battery .
The Pro also includes 3G mobile hotspot abilities, and thus can share its connection, with up to five other devices.
The Motorola Droid 2 (GSM/UMTS version: Motorola Milestone 2; GSM/UMTS/CDMA version: Motorola Droid 2 Global) is the fifth phone in Verizon's Droid line. In the U.S., it is available exclusively on Verizon Wireless, and was released August 12, 2010 (pre-order sales of the device began August 11) Sony VGP-BPS13 battery .
It runs the Android operating system by Google, and can run Flash Player 10.1. It comes with 8 GB of internal memory and is shipped with an additional 8 GB SDHC card, upgradable to 32 GB. It has a 3.7 in display and a 5 megapixel camera.Unlike theDroid X, the Motorola Droid 2 features a redesigned slide-out QWERTY keyboard Dell Studio 1555 battery ,
but still features the Swype keyboard found on the Droid X. A limited edition version featuring Star Wars character R2-D2 and exclusive apps and content was announced by Verizon for September 30, 2010
Reviewers felt that the good aspects of the prior Droid, like the sturdy build and functional styling, were maintained in the Droid 2, but with many refinements Dell KM958 battery .
Some reviewers thought that the styling was less abrupt, but some criticised the device for not departing enough from the prior design. The consensus on the screen was that, while it was not as big as some phones, or as high resolution as the iPhone 4, it was good quality and not too small Dell XPS M1210 Battery .
The new keyboard was praised by some reviewers for being less awkward than on the prior Droid, but others found little improvement. The keyboard overall had mixed reviews but was generally the same but without a d-pad. The camera, like other parts of the device SONY VAIO VGN-FW33GW Battery ,
was criticised by some for being little better than the prior device, but most were happy with picture quality. Most reviewers found the device to be good and solid all around, but were unimpressed by what they saw as a small evolution of an already successful model rather than a revolutionary new device SONY VAIO VGN-FW33G/E1 Battery .
In October 2010, Microsoft filed a lawsuit against Motorola with the International Trade Commission in a district court in Washington, D.C., claiming the manufacturer had "infringed on nine patents in its Android-based devices SONY VAIO VGN-FW290JTH Battery .
" The court papers specifically mention the Droid 2 and Motorola Charm smartphones but Microsoft claimed that it was not limited to these phones.
In December 2010 a Texas man claimed to have had a Droid 2 explode in his ear. He said he was considering suing Motorola SONY VAIO VGN-FW290JTB Battery .
However, some have questioned the validity of the phone 'exploding' when it wasn't the battery and that the phone continued to operate. On further analysis, according to Motorola, "glass experts have determined that the breakage is consistent with an external force applied to the phone SONY VAIO VGN-FW29/B Battery ."

HelloMoto, Motorola has a resurgence
In 2002-2003, Motorola's Mobile Devices department reinvented itself. Three areas of significant improvement were user friendliness, design and brand. Motorola started paying more attention to the user experience, and models such as the v300, v400 and v600 (called the triplets) were among the first to boast an easy user interface Dell Latitude E6500 battery .

(more expensive variant of SLVR L6), RAZR V3c (CDMA), RAZR V3i (with upgraded camera and appearance), V3x (supports 3G technology and has a 2 MP camera), RAZR V3xx (supports 3.5G technology) and RAZR maxx V6 (supports 3.5G technology and has a 2 MP camera) announced on July 2006 Dell Latitude E6400 Battery .
In October 2009, Motorola announced a forthcoming smartphone named "Droid" that launched on the Verizon network on November 6, 2009.This handset features version 2.0 of Google's Android operating system. "Droid" was a major success for Motorola Mobile Devices Dell Latitude E6400 battery .
It received the prestigious "TIME Gadget of the Year" award in 2009. In 2010, Motorola launched "Droid X" and "Droid 2". Droid X was a major success, which has helped Motorola to regain much of its market share in the US Dell Vostro 1310 battery .
Atrix and Droid Bionic
On January 5, 2011, motorola mobility announced that the Atrix 4G and the Droid Bionic were headed to AT&T and Verizon (respectively), with expected release dates in Q1 of 2011. The Motorola Atrix is expected to be the first phone to feature a traditional desktop UI when docked with either the multimedia or laptop dock accessories Dell Studio 1735 battery .
The Atrix 4G Laptop Dock will have a 11.6-inch screen with a full keyboard and a battery lasting up to eight hours, however the Atrix 4G must be docked in order for the laptop accessory to function.
A microprocessor incorporates most or all of the functions of a computer's central processing unit (CPU) on a single integrated circuit (IC, or microchip) Dell Studio 1535 battery .
The first microprocessors emerged in the early 1970s and were used for electronic calculators, using binary-coded decimal (BCD) arithmetic on 4-bit words. Other embedded uses of 4-bit and 8-bit microprocessors, such as terminals, printers, various kinds of automation etc., followed soon after Dell Vostro A860 battery .
Affordable 8-bit microprocessors with 16-bit addressing also led to the first general-purpose microcomputers from the mid-1970s on.
During the 1960s, computer processors were often constructed out of small and medium-scale ICs containing from tens to a few hundred transistors Dell Vostro A840 battery .
The integration of a whole CPU onto a single chip greatly reduced the cost of processing power. From these humble beginnings, continued increases in microprocessor capacity have rendered other forms of computers almost completely obsolete (see history of computing hardware) Dell Studio XPS 1640 battery ,
with one or more microprocessors used in everything from the smallest embedded systems and handheld devices to the largest mainframes and supercomputers.
Since the early 1970s, the increase in capacity of microprocessors has followed Moore's law Dell Vostro 1720 battery ,
which suggests that the number of transistors that can be fitted onto a chip doubles every two years. Although originally calculated as a doubling every year, Moore later refined the period to two years. It is often incorrectly quoted as a doubling of transistors every 18 months Dell Vostro 1710 battery .
Three projects delivered a microprocessor at about the same time: Intel's 4004, Texas Instruments (TI) TMS 1000, and Garrett AiResearch's Central Air Data Computer (CADC).
The Intel 4004 is generally regarded as the first microprocessor, and cost thousands of dollars Dell Inspiron 1320n battery .
The first known advertisement for the 4004 is dated November 1971 and appeared in Electronic News. The project that produced the 4004 originated in 1969, when Busicom, a Japanese calculator manufacturer, asked Intel to build a chipset for high-performance desktop calculators Dell Inspiron 1320 battery .
Busicom's original design called for a programmable chip set consisting of seven different chips. Three of the chips were to make a special-purpose CPU with its program stored in ROM and its data stored in shift register read-write memory. Ted Hoff, the Intel engineer assigned to evaluate the project Dell Inspiron 1764 battery,
believed the Busicom design could be simplified by using dynamic RAM storage for data, rather than shift register memory, and a more traditional general-purpose CPU architecture. Hoff came up with a four–chip architectural proposal: a ROM chip for storing the programs, a dynamic RAM chip for storing data, a simple I/O device and a 4-bit central processing unit (CPU) Dell Inspiron 1564 battery .
Although not a chip designer, he felt the CPU could be integrated into a single chip. This chip would later be called the 4004 microprocessor.
The architecture and specifications of the 4004 came from the interaction of Hoff with Stanley Mazor, a software engineer reporting to him, and with Busicom engineer Masatoshi Shima, during 1969 Dell Inspiron 1464 battery .
In April 1970, Intel hired Federico Faggin to lead the design of the four-chip set. Faggin, who originally developed the silicon gate technology (SGT) in 1968 at Fairchild Semiconductor and designed the world’s first commercial integrated circuit using SGT, the Fairchild 3708 Dell Inspiron N7010 battery ,
had the correct background to lead the project since it was SGT that made it possible to implement a single-chip CPU with the proper speed, power dissipation and cost. Faggin also developed the new methodology for random logic design, based on silicon gate, that made the 4004 possible Dell Inspiron N5010 battery .
Production units of the 4004 were first delivered to Busicom in March 1971 and shipped to other customers in late 1971.
The Smithsonian Institution says TI engineers Gary Boone and Michael Cochran succeeded in creating the first microcontroller (also called a microcomputer) in 1971 Dell Inspiron N3610 battery .
The result of their work was the TMS 1000, which went commercial in 1974.
TI developed the 4-bit TMS 1000 and stressed pre-programmed embedded applications, introducing a version called the TMS1802NC on September 17, 1971 which implemented a calculator on a chip Dell Inspiron N4010 battery .
TI filed for the patent on the microprocessor. Gary Boone was awarded U.S. Patent 3,757,306 for the single-chip microprocessor architecture on September 4, 1973. It may never be known which company actually had the first working microprocessor running on the lab bench Dell Inspiron 9100 battery .
In both 1971 and 1976, Intel and TI entered into broad patent cross-licensing agreements, with Intel paying royalties to TI for the microprocessor patent. A nice history of these events is contained in court documentation from a legal dispute between Cyrix and Intel, with TI as intervenor and owner of the microprocessor patent Dell Studio XPS 1340 battery .
A computer-on-a-chip is a variation of a microprocessor that combines the microprocessor core (CPU), some program memory and read/write memory, and I/O (input/output) lines onto one chip. The computer-on-a-chip patent, called the "microcomputer patent" at the time, U.S Dell XPS M2010 battery .
Patent 4,074,351, was awarded to Gary Boone and Michael J. Cochran of TI. Aside from this patent, the standard meaning of microcomputer is a computer using one or more microprocessors as its CPU(s), while the concept defined in the patent is more akin to a microcontroller Dell XPS M1730 battery .
In 1971 Pico Electronics nd General Instrument (GI) introduced their first collaboration in ICs, a complete single chip calculator IC for the Monroe/Litton Royal Digital III calculator. This chip could also arguably lay claim to be one of the first microprocessors or microcontrollers having ROM, RAM and a RISC instruction set on-chip Dell Inspiron Mini 12 battery .
The layout for the four layers of the PMOS process was hand drawn at x500 scale on mylar film, a significant task at the time given the complexity of the chip.
Pico was a spinout by five GI design engineers whose vision was to create single chip calculator ICs Hp 2230 Battery .
They had significant previous design experience on multiple calculator chipsets with both GI and Marconi-Elliott. The key team members had originally been tasked by Elliott Automation to create an 8 bit computer in MOS and had helped establish a MOS Research Laboratory in Glenrothes, Scotland in 1967 Hp cq20 Battery .
Calculators were becoming the largest single market for semiconductors and Pico and GI went on to have significant success in this burgeoning market. GI continued to innovate in microprocessors and microcontrollers with products including the PIC1600, PIC1640 and PIC1650 Hp Pavilion cq72 Battery .
In 1987 the GI Microelectronics business was spun out into the very successful PIC microcontroller business Hp Pavilion cq42 Battery .
