Northwestern University Northwestern University is a private research university with campuses in Evanston and Chicago in Illinois, United States. Northwestern has 12 undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools offering 124 undergraduate degrees and 145 graduate and professional degrees.[4][5HP Pavilion dv3-2106tu Laptop Keyboard Northwestern was founded in 1851 by John Evans, for whom Evanston is named, and eight other lawyers, businessmen and Methodist leaders to serve the people of a region that had once been known as the Northwest Territory. Instruction began in 1855; women were admitted in 1869. Today, the main campus is a 240-acre (97 ha) parcel in Evanston, HP G71-442NR Laptop Keyboard along the shores ofLake Michigan. The university's law and medical schools are located on a 25-acre (10 ha) campus in Chicago's Streetervilleneighborhood. In 2008, the University opened a campus in Education City, Doha, Qatar with programs in journalism and communication. In academic year 2010-11, Northwestern enrolled 8,397 undergraduate and 7,870 graduate and professional students.[6]HP G42-415DX Laptop Keyboard Northwestern has one of the largest university endowments in the United States, currently valued at $7.2 billion.[1] One of only 62 institutions elected to the Association of American Universities (1917), Northwestern was awarded more than $500 million in research grants in 2010–2011, placing it in the first tier of the major research universities in the United States by the Center for Measuring University Performance.[7][8] HP 455264-001 Laptop Keyboard Its schools of management, engineering, and communication, for example, are among the most academically productive in the nation.[9] Northwestern is a founding member of the Big Ten Conference and remains the only private university in the conference. GATEWAY MX8734 Laptop Keyboard The foundation of Northwestern University is traceable to a meeting on May 31, 1850 of nine prominent Chicago businessmen, Methodist leaders and attorneys who had formed the idea of establishing a university to serve what had once been known as the Northwest Territory. On January 28, 1851, the Illinois General Assembly granted a charter to the Trustees of the North-Western University, making it the first chartered university in Illinois.[10][11][a] HP CT1A Laptop Keyboard The school’s nine founders, all of whom were Methodists (three of them ministers), knelt in prayer and worship before launching their first organizational meeting.[12] Although they affiliated the university with the Methodist Episcopal Church, they were committed to non-sectarian admissions, believing that Northwestern should serve all people in the newly developing territory.[13]COMPAQ Presario CQ61 Laptop Keyboard John Evans, for whom Evanston is named, bought 379 acres (153 ha) of land along Lake Michigan in 1853, and Philo Judson developed plans for what would become the city of Evanston. The first building, Old College, opened on November 5, 1855.[14] To raise funds for construction, Northwestern sold $100 "perpetual scholarships" entitling the purchaser and his heirs to free tuition.[15][16] In 1873 the Evanston College for Ladies merged with Northwestern, and Frances Willard, DELL V100830AS1 Laptop Keyboard who later gained fame as a suffragette and as one of the founders of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), became the school's first dean of women. Willard Residential College (1938) is named in her honor. Northwestern admitted its first women students in 1869, and the first woman was graduated in 1874.[17] HP AELX6U00210 Laptop Keyboard Northwestern fielded its first intercollegiate football team in 1882, later becoming a founding member of the Big Ten Conference. In the 1870s and 1880s, Northwestern affiliated itself with already existing schools of law, medicine, and dentistry in Chicago. As the university increased in wealth and distinction, and enrollments grew, these professional schools were integrated with the undergraduate college in Evanston; HP K031802E4US Laptop Keyboard the result was a modern research university combining professional, graduate, and undergraduate programs, which gave equal weight to teaching and research.[18][19] The Association of American Universitiesinvited Northwestern to become a member in 1917. Compaq Presario CQ57 Series Laptop Keyboard Under Walter Dill Scott's presidency from 1920 to 1939, Northwestern began construction of an integrated campus in Chicago designed by James Gamble Rogers to house the professional schools; established the Kellogg School of Management; and built several prominent buildings on the Evanston campus, LENOVO IdeaPad S10e 4068 Laptop Keyboard Dyche Stadium (now named Ryan Field) and Deering Library among others. In 1933, a proposal to merge Northwestern with the University of Chicago was considered but rejected.[20][21] Northwestern played host to the first-ever NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship game in 1939 in the original Patten Gymnasium, later demolished and relocated farther north to make room for the Technological Institute. SONY VGN-FE550G Laptop Keyboard Like other American research universities, Northwestern was transformed by World War II.Franklyn B. Bill drove drastic expansion of both campuses. SAMSUNG N128 Laptop Keyboard In 1948 prominent anthropologist Melville J. Herskovits founded the Program of African Studies at Northwestern, the first center of its kind at an American academic institution.[22] J. Roscoe Miller's tenure as president from 1949–1970 was responsible for the expansion of the Evanston campus, with the construction of the lakefill on Lake Michigan, growth of the faculty and new academic programs, as well as polarizing Vietnam-era student protests.  TOSHIBA Satellite L755-SP5102CL Laptop Keyboard In 1978, the first and secondUnabomber attacks occurred at Northwestern University.[23] Relations between Evanston and Northwestern were strained throughout much of the post-war era because of episodes of disruptive student activism,[24] disputes over municipal zoning, building codes, and law enforcement,[25] as well as restrictions on the sale of alcohol near campus until 1972.[26][27]Northwestern's exemption from state and municipal property tax obligations under its original charter has historically been a source of town and gown tension.  HP Pavilion dv6736nr Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Though government support for universities declined in the 1970s and 1980s, President Arnold R. Weber was able to stabilize university finances, leading to a revitalization of the campuses. As admissions to colleges and universities grew increasingly competitive in the 1990s and 2000s, President Henry S. Bienen's tenure saw a notable increase in the number and quality of undergraduate applicants, continued expansion of the facilities and faculty, HP Pavilion dv6-2119el Laptop CPU Cooling Fan and renewed athletic competitiveness. In 1999, Northwestern student journalists uncovered information exonerating Illinois death row inmate Anthony Porter two days before his scheduled execution, and the Innocence Project has since exonerated 10 more men.[28][29] On January 11, 2003, in a speech at Northwestern School of Law's Lincoln Hall, then Governor of Illinois George Ryan announced that he would commute the sentences of more than 150 death rowinmates.[30]HP Pavilion tx2514ca Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The Latin phrase on Northwestern's seal, Quaecumque sunt vera (Whatsoever things are true) is drawn from the Epistle of Paul to the Philippians 4:8, while the Greek phrase inscribed on the pages of an open book is taken from the Gospel of John 1:14: ο λόγος πλήρης χάριτος και αληθείας (The Word full of grace and truth).[31][32]  HP Pavilion dv5-1073ez Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Purple became Northwestern's official color in 1892,[33] replacing black and gold after a university committee concluded that too many other universities had used these colors. Today, Northwestern's official color is purple, although white is something of an official color as well, being mentioned in both the university's earliest song, Alma Mater (1907) ("Hail to purple, hail to white") and in many university guidelines.[3][34]HP Mini 110-3130tu Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Northwestern's Evanston campus, where the undergraduate schools, the Graduate School, and the Kellogg School of Management are located, runs north-south from Lincoln Avenue to Clark Street west of Lake Michigan along Sheridan Road. HP Mini 110-1032NR Laptop Keyboard Streeterville is a neighborhood in the Near North Side community area of Chicago, Illinois, United States, north of theChicago River in Cook County. It is bounded by the river on the south, the Magnificent Mile portion of Michigan Avenue on the west, and Lake Michigan on the north and east, according to most sources, although the City of Chicago only recognizes a small portion of this region as Streeterville. Thus, it can be described as the Magnificent Mile plus all land east of it.[1][2] The majority of the land in this neighborhood is reclaimed sandbar.[3]Compaq Presario CQ57 Series Laptop Keyboard The neighborhood contains a combination of hotels, restaurants, professional office centers, residential high rises, universities, medical facilities, and cultural venues.[4] The area has undergone increased development in the early 21st century as numerous empty lots in Streeterville have been converted into commercial and residential properties, especially in the southern part of the neighborhood.[1] The neighborhooLenovo 63Y0047 Laptop Keyboard Before the American settlement of the Chicago area, the lake shoreline fluctuated from year to year as storm waves eroded parts of the shore and built up the shore elsewhere.[6] By 1803, when American troops started the construction of Fort Dearborn, a baymouth bar blocked the mouth of the river causing it to jog southwards and enter Lake Michigan at about the level of present dayMadison Street.[7] When surveyed in 1821 the Lake Michigan shoreline north of the river ran approximately along what is now North St Clair Street, SAMSUNG Q330-JS09 Laptop Keyboard just to the east of what

Silt and sand accumulated north of this pier, creating usable land that was later nicknamed "The Sands".[3] Squatters and a vice district encroached on the district, causing angst among the property owners. In 1857,Chicago Mayor John Wentworth evicted these trespassers from the land.[3] DELL PVDG3 Laptop Keyboard In the late 1880s, George Streeter claimed that his newly acquired boat struck a sandbar just off the Chicago shoreline during a storm.[9] Landfill dumped in an effort to create land on which to build Lake Shore Drive by the Lincoln Park Board created 186 acres (0.75 km2) of new land along the lake front, which Streeter attempted to claim. Streeter claimed that this newly created land was his and that it was an independent territory which he called the District of Lake Michigan.[3][10]TOSHIBA Satellite l20-101 Laptop Keyboard For the next few decades, Streeter persisted in his claims, sometimes supporting them through criminal means.[9] A witness in Streeter's 1902 land fraud trial testified that Streeter had purposely set out to contest the claims of the wealthy shoreline owners. Contractor Hank Brusser told the court that Streeter asked him to fill in portions of the shoreline in order to create confusion over land titles. Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 Laptop Keyboard According to Brusser, Streeter said that: "They [the owners of the shoreline] will have to buy us off" and that "We'll get a million out of it".[11] Streeter was also motivated by the profit he gained by selling and taxing the land he claimed.[12][13]DELL PF236 Laptop Keyboard The local press became enamored with the story of Streeter's brash personality and his self-proclaimed district.[3] MayorWilliam Hale Thompson tried to evict the Streeters for selling liquor,[14] and after several eviction attempts and gun battles, Streeter landed in jail.[3] In 1918, the courts ruled against his claim of sovereignty.[3] Today, the district is home to some of the most expensive real estate in Chicago.[15]HP Probook 4515S Laptop Keyboard The 1920 opening of the Michigan Avenue Bridge, which was part of the efforts to enact theBurnham Plan of 1909, as well as the economic boom of the 1920s,[5] brought wealth to the eastern sector of the Near North Side and paved the way for a luxury shopping district on North Michigan Avenue. A local real estate developer named Arthur Rubloff led the revitalization of North Michigan Avenue under the banner of “TheMagnificent Mile.” The success of this effort spurred the erection of more high-rise apartments and new investment in the Near North Side.[10] This development led to the "canyonization" of Michigan Avenue, where the buildings on both sides of the street tower above, creating an urban "canyon".ACER Aspire 5742 Laptop Keyboard DELL UW739 Laptop Keyboard Although there is general agreement[by whom?] that Streeterville is bounded on the west by the Magnificent Mile, the City of Chicago and the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents, claim the boundary extends one block further to the west to Rush Street.[16][17] Streeterville includes some of Chicago's tallest skyscrapers, such as the John Hancock Tower, and upscale stores, hotels, and restaurants.  HP Pavilion dv6-3109ea Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Although its main campus is in Evanston, Illinois, Northwestern University has its Chicago campus here.Northwestern Memorial Hospital and its Feinberg School of Medicine is located in Streeterville. It contains an award-winning Ritz-Carlton hotel, luxury condominiums, and office space and sits atop a block-long base containing an atrium-style retail mall that fronts on the Magnificent Mile. FUJITSU Lifebook T4220 Laptop Keyboard Water Tower Place's opening changed the economic dynamics of the Magnificent Mile by bringing middle-class shops to what had been a street dominated by luxury retailers, tony hotels, and expensive apartments. It shifted downtown Chicago's retail center of gravity north from State Street to North Michigan Avenue. SONY VAIO VGN-N11M Laptop Keyboard The 360 condo units in the tower were designed in 1973. Richard A. Meyers Realty, Inc., was the contracted sales and marketing consultant. HP Pavilion dv6-3178ee Laptop Keyboard The net result was a mathematically designed housing product that allowed for specific space allocation for each room in each unit. HP Compaq NC8430 Laptop Keyboard In 2001, a program of refurbishments was begun, including enclosing the exterior arcade along Michigan and adding a loading dock in the middle of the block for additional retail space. Also included were updates to the escalators and fountains leading into the mall from North Michigan Avenue lobby, as well as enhancements to the sidewalk areas, the mall's exterior facades, and department store entrances.
