Park Tower (Chicago)

Park Tower, located at 800 North Michigan Avenue in Chicago, is a skyscraper that was completed in 2000. At 844 feet (257 m) tall with 70 floors — 67 floors for practical use, it is the eleventh tallest building in Chicago, the 35th tallest building in the United States, and the eighty-third tallest in the world by architectural detail. GATEWAY M-1629 Laptop Keyboard It is one of the world's tallest buildings to be clad with architectural precast concrete (the Transamerica Pyramid Building inSan Francisco is taller). It is one of the tallest non-steel framed structures in the world—it is a cast-in-place concrete framed structure. This building was originally intended to be 650 feet (198 m) tall. But later, the ceiling heights were increased allowing it to reach 844 feet (257 m).  TOSHIBA Satellite 1805-s204 Laptop Keyboard The building occupies a footprint of 28,000 square feet (2,601 m²). Because of the small footprint and the fact that it is a non-steel framed concrete building, this is the first building in the United States to be designed with a tuned mass damper from the outset. While other skyscrapers in America have anti-sway systems, FUJITSU Amilo Mini Ui 3520 Laptop Keyboard they were always added later. A tuned mass damper counteracts wind effects on the structure. (The 300 ton damper is a massive steel pendulum hung from four cables inside a square cage) Because of its massive weight, the damper has inertia that helps stabilize the building from swaying in the wind. HP G61-400SP Laptop Keyboard Designed by Chicago architectural firm Lucien Lagrange Architects, Park Tower is a mixed use tower. As the name suggests, the lower portion holds a Park Hyatt Hotel while the upper levels contain luxury condominiums. SONY VAIO VGN-AR170 Laptop Keyboard The building contains 193,000 square feet (17,930 m²) of hotel space (202 rooms), 475,000 square feet (44,129 m²) of residential space, 20,000 square feet (1,858 m²) of retail, and 92,000 square feet (8,547 m²) of parking. Levels 9, 19, and the crown are mechanical areas. SONY 147977821 Laptop Keyboard With its location on the prestigious Magnificent Mile, Park Tower is also home to the acclaimed restaurant NoMi. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is an association of 1,281 institutions, conferences, organizations and individuals that organizes the athletic programs of many colleges and universities in the United Statesand Canada. It is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. HP G61-300CA Laptop Keyboard In August 1973, the current three-division setup of Division I, Division II, and Division III was adopted by the NCAA membership in a special convention. Under NCAA rules, Division I and Division II schools can offer scholarships to athletesfor playing a sport. Division III schools may not offer any athletic scholarships. DELL Inspiron N5030 Laptop Keyboard Generally, larger schools compete in Division I and smaller schools in II and III. Division I football was further divided into I-A and I-AA in 1978. Subsequently the term "Division I-AAA" was briefly added to delineate Division I schools which do not field a football program at all, but that term is no longer officially used by the NCAA.[3] In 2006, Divisions I-A and I-AA were respectively renamed the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). ACER Aspire 4810TZ-4011 Laptop Keyboard Inter-collegiate sports in the US began in 1852 when crews from Harvard and Yale met in a challenge race in the sport of rowing. As rowing remained the pre-eminent sport in the country into the late-1800s, TOSHIBA Satellite 2410 PS241L-5Y34T Laptop Keyboard many of the initial debates about collegiate athletic eligibility and purpose were settled through organizations like the Rowing Association of American Colleges and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association. As other sports emerged, notably football and basketball, many of these same concepts and standards were adopted. Football, in particular, began to emerge as a marquee sport, but the rules of the game itself were in constant flux and often had to be adapted for each contest. FUJITSU Lifebook E8110 Laptop Keyboard The NCAA dates its formation to two White House conferences convened by President Theodore Roosevelt to "encourage reforms" to college football practices in the early 20th century, which had resulted in repeated injuries and deaths and "prompted many college and universities to discontinue the sport."[1]TOSHIBA Satellite L655-S5158 Laptop Keyboard Following those White House meetings, Chancellor Henry MacCracken of New York University organized a meeting of 13 colleges and universities to initiate changes; at a follow-on meeting, 62 institutions became charter members of the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS).[1] The IAAUS was officially established on March 31, 1906, and took its present name, the NCAA, in 1910.[1]HP G71-343US Laptop Keyboard Until the 1980s, the association did not offer women's athletics. Instead an organization named the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) governed women's collegiate sports in the United States. By 1982, however, all divisions of the NCAA offered national championship events for women's athletics and most members of the AIAW joined the NCAA.  Lenovo 63Y0047 Laptop Keyboard  HP Mini 210-2012eo Laptop Keyboard the organization's headquarters from the LaSalle Hotel in Chicago (where its offices were shared by the headquarters of theBig Ten Conference) to the Fairmount Building at 101 West 11th Street in Downtown Kansas City. The move was intended to separate the NCAA from direct influence of any individual conference and to keep it centrally located. Compaq Presario CQ57 Series Laptop Keyboard The Fairmount was a block from Municipal Auditorium which had hosted Final Four games in 1940, 1941 and 1942.After Byers moved to Kansas City, the championships would be held in Municipal in 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1961, 1964.The Fairmount office consisted of three rooms with no air conditioning. Byers' staff consisted of four people (an assistant, two secretaries and a bookkeeper).[6]In 1964 it moved three blocks away to offices in the Midland Theatre. TOSHIBA Mini NB 505-SP0160 Laptop Keyboard In 1973 it moved to 6299 Nall at Shawnee Mission Parkway in suburban Mission, Kansas in a $1.2 million building on 3.4 acres (14,000 m2). In 1989 it moved six miles (10 km) further south into the suburbs to 6201 College Boulevard in Overland Park, Kansas. The new building was on 11.35 acres (45,900 m2) and had 130,000 square feet (12,000 m2) of space.[7]DELL Vostro PP37L Laptop Keyboard The NCAA was dissatisfied with its Johnson County, Kansas suburban location noting that its location on the south edges of the Kansas City suburbs was more than 40 minutes from Kansas City International Airport. They also noted that the suburban location was not drawing visitors to its new visitors' centre.[8] In 1997 it asked for bids for a new headquarters. Various cities competed for a new headquarters with the two finalists being Kansas City and Indianapolis.  HP Pavilion dv6-4003tu Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Kansas City proposed to relocate the NCAA back downtown near the Crown Center complex and would locate the visitors' centre in Union Station (Kansas City). However Kansas City's main sports venue Kemper Arena was nearly 30 years old.[8] Indianapolis argued that it was in fact more central than Kansas City in that two thirds of the members are east of the Mississippi River.[8]SONY Vaio VPC-EA290L Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Further the 50,000-seat RCA Dome far eclipsed the 17,000-seat Kemper. In 1999 the NCAA moved its 300 member staff to its new headquarters in the White River State Park in a four-story, 140,000-square-foot (13,000 m2) facility on the west edge of downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. Adjacent to the headquarters is the 35,000-square-foot (3,300 m2) NCAA Hall of Champions.[9]HP Pavilion dv6-3033ss Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Structure The NCAA's legislative structure is broken down into cabinets and committees, consisting of various representatives of its member schools.[citation needed] These may be broken down further into sub-committees. Legislation is then passed on, which oversees all the cabinets and committees, and also includes representatives from the schools, SAMSUNG BA59-02487A Laptop Keyboard such as athletic directors and faculty advisors. Management Council legislation goes on to the Board of Directors, which consists of school presidents, for final approval. ACER KB.I170A.083 Laptop Keyboard Sports sanctioned by the NCAA include the following: basketball, baseball (men), softball (women), football (men), cross country, field hockey (women), bowling(women), golf, fencing (coeducational), lacrosse, soccer, gymnastics, rowing (women only), volleyball, ice hockey, water polo, rifle (coeducational), tennis, skiing (coeducational), track and field, swimming and diving, and wrestling (men). SONY VAIO PCG-FR315M Laptop Keyboard The NCAA has never sanctioned an official championship in the highest level of football, now known as Division I FBS. Instead, several outside bodies award their own titles; see below. ACER KB.I170A.083 Laptop Keyboard As of December 2011,[13] UCLA, Stanford, and University of Southern California have the most NCAA championships; UCLA holds the most, winning a combined 108 team championships in men's and women's sports, with Stanford second, with 103, University of Southern California third with 95, Abilene Christian with 55, and then Oklahoma State with 50. SONY VAIO PCG-FR315M Laptop Keyboard During the 2008-09 school year, the Pac-10 conference captured 11 NCAA titles, outperforming any other conference. It was followed by the ACC and Big Ten with five championships, and by the Big 12 and SEC conferences with four each.[14] SONY 148084122 Laptop Keyboard The NCAA currently awards 87 national championships yearly; 44 women's, 40 men's, and coed championships for fencing, rifle, and skiing. For every NCAA sanctioned sport other than Division I FBS football, the NCAA awards trophies with gold, silver, and bronze plating for the first, second, and third place teams respectively.[citation neededASUS X53S Laptop Keyboard ] In the case of the NCAA basketball tournaments, both semifinalists who did not make the championship game receive bronze plated trophies for third place (prior to 1982 the teams played a "consolation" game to determine third place).[citation needed] Similar trophies are awarded to both semifinalists in the NCAA football tournaments (which are conducted in Division I FCS and both lower divisions), which have never had a third-place game. Winning teams maintain permanent possession of these trophies unless it is later found that they were won via serious rules violations. HP Pavilion dv3-2155ee Laptop Keyboard Starting with the 2001 season, and again in 2008, the trophies were changed.[citation needed] Starting in the 2007 basketball season, teams that make the Final Four in the Division I tournament receive bronze plated "regional championship" trophies upon winning their Regional Championship. The teams that make the National Championship game receive an additional trophy that is gold plated for the winner and silver plated for the runner-up. HP G62-361TX Laptop Keyboard Starting in the mid-1990s, the National Champions in men's and women's basketball receive a very elaborate trophy sponsored by Siemens with a black marble base and crystal "neck" with a removable crystal basketball following the presentation of the standard NCAA Championship trophy. DELL Latitude D620 Laptop Keyboard The NCAA does not hold a championship tournament for Division I FBS football. In the past, the "national championship" went to teams that placed first in any of a number of season-ending media polls, most notable the AP Poll of writers and the Coaches Poll. Currently, the Bowl Championship Series— SONY V072078AS1 Laptop Keyboard an association of the conferences and independent schools that compete in Division I FBS and four bowl games—has arranged to place the top two teams (based on a formula blending human polls and computer rankings)[15] into a national title game. The winner of the BCS title game must be ranked first in the final Coaches' Poll and receives the AFCA Coaches' Trophy (presently sponsored by Dr Pepper); since the NCAA awards no national championship for Division I FBS football,  DELL Vostro PP37L Laptop Keyboard this trophy does not say NCAA as other NCAA college sports national championship trophies do. The AP and other organizations are still free to name as national champions other teams than the one that won the BCS championship, although all conferences (and by extension their teams) are contractually agreed to the BCS formula and champion the USA Today Coaches' poll is required to vote the winner of the “BCS National Championship Game” the #1 team in the nation in the final poll. HP Pavilion dv8315nr Laptop CPU Cooling Fan All conferences have sanctioned this practice and championship (with various changes to the present form seen today) for the several contractual periods since 1998.[16] In the late 1940s there were only two colleges in the country with a national TV contract, a considerable source of revenue. In 1951, the NCAA voted to prohibit any live TV broadcast of college football games during the season. HP Pavilion dv6-4003tu Laptop CPU Cooling Fan No sooner had the NCAA voted to ban television than public outcry forced it to retreat. Instead, the NCAA voted to restrict the number of televised games for each team to stop the slide in gate attendance. Harold Stassen, president of theUniversity of Pennsylvania (Penn), defied the monopoly and signed a $200,000 contract with ABC. Eventually, Penn was forced to back down when the NCAA threatened to expel the Quakers from the association.  HP Envy 15 Laptop Keyboard By the 1980s, televised college football had become a much larger source of income for the NCAA. If the television contracts the NCAA had with ABC, CBS, andESPN had remained in effect for the 1984 season, they would have generated US$73.6 million for the Association and its members. In September 1981, the Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma and the University of Georgia Athletic Association filed suit against the NCAA in district court in Oklahoma. SONY VAIO VGN-AW31S Laptop Keyboard The plaintiffs stated that the NCAA's football television plan constituted price fixing, output restraints, boycott, and monopolizing, all of which were illegal under the Sherman Act. The NCAA argued that its pro-competitive and non-commercial justifications for the plan—-protection of live gate, maintenance of competitive balance among NCAA member institutions and creation of a more attractive "product" to compete with other forms of entertainment—-combined to make the plan reasonable. HP Pavilion dv4-1235ee Laptop Keyboard In September 1982, the district court found in favor of the plaintiffs, ruling that the plan violated antitrust laws. It enjoined the Association from enforcing the contract. The NCAA appealed all the way to the United States Supreme Court, but lost in 1984 in the 7-2 ruling NCAA v. Board of Regents of Univ. of Oklahoma.[21]  TOSHIBA Satellite L655-S5065 Laptop Keyboard Eligibility To participate in college athletics in the freshmen year the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) states that students must meet three requirements; graduate from high school, complete the minimum required academic courses, and have qualifying grade-point average (GPA) and SAT or ACT scores.[22]HP G62-b56EF Laptop Keyboard The 16 academic credits are four courses in English, two courses in math, two classes in social science, two in natural or physical science, and one additional course in English, math, natural or physical science, or another academic course such as foreign language.[23]SAMSUNG N140 Laptop Keyboard To meet the requirements for grade point average and SAT scores students the lowest possible GPA a student may be eligible with is a 1.700 with an SAT score of 1400. Creation of a mechanism to enforce the NCAA's legislation occurred in 1952 after careful consideration by the membership. HP Envy 15 Laptop Keyboard Allegations of rules violations are referred to the NCAA's investigative staff. A preliminary investigation is initiated to determine if an official inquiry is warranted and to categorize any resultant violations as secondary or major. If several violations are found, the NCAA may determine that the school as a whole has exhibited a "lack of institutional control." TOSHIBA Satellite L775D-S7332 Laptop Keyboard The institution involved is notified promptly and may appear in its own behalf before the NCAA Committee on Infractions. The NCAA, however, has shown it is willing to forgoe its' charter to perform a preliminary investigation in favor of basing decisions, penalties and suspensions on unsupported third party documentation. LENOVO Ideapad S10 Laptop Keyboard Findings of the Committee (or third party documentation) on Infractions and the resultant sanctions in major cases are reported to the institution. Sanctions will generally include having the institution placed on "probation" for a period of time, in addition to other penalties. The institution may appeal the findings or sanctions to an appeals committee. After considering written reports and oral presentations by representatives of the Committee on Infractions and the institution, DELL 0PVDG3 Laptop Keyboard the committee acts on the appeal. Action may include accepting the infractions committee's findings and penalty, altering either, or making its own findings and imposing an appropriate penalty. Contrary to the NCAA charter, however, the Committee may disallow and has openly disallowed consideration of any appeals by the institution.  DELL Vostro 3500 Laptop Keyboard In cases of particularly egregious misconduct, the NCAA has the power to ban a school from participating in a particular sport, a penalty known as the "Death Penalty". Since 1985, any school that commits major violations during the probationary period can be banned from the sport involved for up to two years. ACER Aspire 5741 Laptop Keyboard However, when the NCAA opts not to issue a death penalty for a repeat violation, it must explain why it didn't do so. This penalty has only been imposed three times in its modern form, most notably when Southern Methodist University's football team had its 1987 season canceled due to massive rules violations dating back more than a decade. HP G61-420SO Laptop Keyboard SMU opted not to field a team in 1988 as well due to the aftershocks from the sanctions, and the program has never recovered; it has only two winning seasons and one bowl appearance since then. The devastating effect the death penalty had on SMU has reportedly made the NCAA skittish about issuing another one. Since the SMU case, there are only three instances where the NCAA has seriously considered imposing it against a Division I school; it imposed it against Division II Morehouse College's men's soccer team in 2003 and Division III MacMurray College's men's tennis team in 2005. SONY VAIO VPCF126FM Laptop Keyboard Additionally, in particularly egregious cases of rules violations, coaches, athletic directors and athletic support staff can be barred from working for any NCAA member school without permission from the NCAA. This procedure is known as a "show-cause penalty" (not to be confused with an order to show cause in the legal sense).[26] Theoretically, TOSHIBA Satellite L300 Laptop Keyboard a school can hire someone with a "show cause" on their record during the time the show cause order is in effect only with permission from the NCAA Infractions Committee. The school assumes the risks and stigma of hiring such a person. It may then end up being sanctioned by the NCAA and the Infractions Committee for their choice, SAMSUNG N140 Laptop Keyboard possibly losing athletic scholarships, revenue from schools who would not want to compete with that other school, and the ability for their games to be televised, along with restrictions on recruitment and practicing times. As a result, a show-cause order usually has the effect of blackballing individuals from being hired for the duration of the order. HP Mini 110-1032NR Laptop Keyboard Furthermore, in particularly egregious cases of alleged despicable institutional behavior, proven or unproven, and athletically or non-athletically related, the NCAA may submit an ultimatum to the institution upon threat of implementation of the "Death Penalty", most notably The Penn State University's football program. Compaq Presario CQ57 Series Laptop Keyboard Division I (D-I) is the highest level of intercollegiate athletics sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA) in the United States. D-I schools are generally the major collegiate athletic powers, with larger budgets, more elaborate facilities, and more athletic scholarships than Divisions II and III. This level was once called the University Division of the NCAA, in contrast to the College Division; this terminology was replaced with numeric divisions (I, II, III) in 1973.[1]Lenovo 63Y0047 Laptop Keyboard Infootball only, Division I was further subdivided in 1978 into Division I-A (the principal football schools) and Division I-AA;[2] these were renamed "Football Bowl Subdivision" and "Football Championship Subdivision" in 2006.[3][4] Division I contains 346 institutions. There was a moratorium on any additional movement up to Division I until 2012. SAMSUNG Q330-JS09 Laptop Keyboard All Division I schools must field athletes in at least seven sports for men and seven for women or six for men and eight for women, with two team sports for each gender.[5] There are several other NCAA sanctioned minimums and differences that distinguish Division I from Divisions II and III.[5] DELL PVDG3 Laptop Keyboard Subdivisions Subdivisions in Division I exist only in football.[4][26] In all other sports, all Division I conferences are equivalent. The subdivisions were recently given names to reflect the differing levels of football play in them. Additionally, some sports, most notably ice hockey[27] and men's volleyball, have completely different conference structures that operate outside of the normal NCAA sports conference structure. HP Pavilion dv7t-6100 CTO Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The method by which the NCAA determines whether a school is Bowl or Championship subdivision is first by attendance numbers and then by scholarships.[28] For attendance reporting methods, the NCAA allows schools to report either total tickets sold or the number of persons in attendance at the games. They require a minimum average of 15,000 people in attendance every other year.[28] These numbers get posted to the NCAA statistics website for football each HP Pavilion G61-400SP Laptop CPU Cooling Fan the new rules starting in the 2006 season, the number of Bowl Subdivision schools could drop in the future if those schools are not able to pull in enough fans into the games. Additionally, 8 schools in the Championship subdivision had enough attendance to be moved up in 2005 (although they would need to either compete as independents or join a conference in order to do so). SONY Vaio VPC-EB1S1E/BJ Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly known as Division I-A, is the top level of college football, which is currently the only NCAA-sponsored sport without an organized tournament to determine its champion.[29] Schools in Division I FBS compete in post-season bowl games, with the champions of six conferences receiving automatic bids to the Bowl Championship Series to determine a national champion. HP Pavilion dv6-2152nr Laptop CPU Cooling Fan This is due to many factors, including that bowl games are sanctioned by the NCAA (primarily in terms of amateurism regulations and guaranteeing a minimum payout to conferences of the participating schools), but are not under its direct administration. Starting with the 2014 season, the BCS will undergo radical change, with a four-team playoff to determine a national champion almost certain to be adopted.[30]HP Pavilion dv7-6105sg Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The remaining five conferences, often referred to as "Mid-majors",[31][32] do not receive automatic bids but their conference champions are eligible for an automatic bid if it ranks in the BCS top 12 or in the top 16 and ahead of the champion from a conference with an automatic bid. Only one "mid-major" champion can qualify for an automatic bid in any year. The one exception is Notre Dame, which only has to rank in the top eight of the BCS standings to earn an automatic bid to a BCS bowl game.[33]HP Pavilion dv6-3129el Laptop CPU Cooling Fan FBS schools are limited to a total of 85 football players receiving financial assistance.[34] For competitive reasons, a student receiving partial scholarship counts fully against the total of 85. Nearly all FBS schools that are not on NCAA probation give 85 full scholarships. HP Mini 210-1014TU Laptop Keyboard As of 2012, there are 120 full members of Division I FBS. The most recent addition to FBS was Western Kentucky University, which ended its two-year transition period from Division I FCS in 2008 and became a full FBS member in 2009.[35] In July 2011, four schools began transitions to FBS, starting as FCS members. Under NCAA rules, these schools were ineligible for the FCS playoffs in 2011. In 2012, they will be provisional FBS members without bowl eligibility, with full FBS membership following in 2013. TOSHIBA Satellite l20-101 Laptop Keyboard Another school, Georgia Southern University, has announced plans for an eventual upgrade to FBS. The school announced on September 28, 2012 that its students had approved increases in student fees to fund an expansion of its football stadium and an FBS upgrade. The fees must still be approved by the board of regents of the University System of Georgia. If approved by that body, the stadium fee will go into effect in 2013–14, and the FBS fee will take effect after GSU receives an invitation from an FBS conference.[39]ACER Aspire 5742 Laptop Keyboard DELL UW739 Laptop Keyboard Any conference with at least 12 football teams may split its teams into two divisions and conduct a championship game between the division winners.[40][41] The prize is normally a specific bowl game bid for which the conference has a tie-in, or a guaranteed spot in the BCS (depending on the conference).  HP Pavilion dv6-3109ea Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Some conferences have numbers in their names but this often has no relation to the number of member institutions in the conference. The Big Ten Conference did not formally adopt the "Big Ten" name until 1987, but unofficially used that name when it had 10 members from 1917 to 1946, and again from 1949 forward. However, it has continued to use the name even after it expanded to 11 members with the addition of Penn State in 1990 and 12 with the addition of Nebraska in 2011.  ASUS EEE PC 1215N Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The Big 12 Conference was established in 1996 with 12 members, but continues to use that name even after the 2011 departure of Colorado and Nebraska left the conference with 10 members. On the other hand, the Pacific-12 Conference has used names (official or unofficial) that have reflected the number of members since its current charter was established in 1959. The conference unofficially used "Big Five" (1959–62), "Big Six" (1962–64),  Toshiba Portege R835 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan and "Pacific-8" (1964–68) before officially adopting the "Pacific-8" name. The name duly changed to "Pacific-10" in 1978 with the addition of Arizona and Arizona State, and "Pacific-12" in 2011 when Colorado and Utah joined. Conferences also tend to ignore their regional names when adding new schools. SONY VAIO PCG-FR415M Laptop Keyboard For example, the Pac-8/10/12 retained its "Pacific" moniker even though its four newest members (Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah) are located in the inland West, and the Big East kept its name even after adding schools (either in all sports or for football only) located in areas traditionally considered to be in the Midwest (Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, Notre Dame), Upper South (Louisville, Memphis), Southwest (Houston, SMU) and Far West (Boise State, San Diego State).
