Pennsylvania State University The Pennsylvania State University (commonly referred to as Penn State or PSU) is a public, state-related researchuniversity with campuses and facilities in Pennsylvania. Founded in 1855, the university has a stated threefold mission of teaching, research, and public service. Its instructional mission[6]HP 646568-001 Laptop Keyboard includes undergraduate, graduate, professional and continuing education offered through resident instruction and online delivery. Its University Park campus, the flagship campus, lies within the Borough of State College and College Township. The Penn State Dickinson School of Law has facilities located in both Carlisle and State College and the College of Medicine is located in Hershey. Penn State has another 19 commonwealth campuses and 5 special-mission campuses located across the state.[7]FUJITSU Amilo Mini Ui 3520 Laptop Keyboard Annual enrollment at the University Park campus totals more than 44,000 graduate and undergraduate students, making it one of the largest universities in the United States. It has the world's largest dues-paying alumni association.[8] The university's total enrollment in 2009–10 was approximately 94,300 across its 24 campuses[9] and online through its World Campus.[10]HP Mini 210-2011tu Laptop Keyboard The university offers more than 160 majors among all its campuses[11] and administers $1.83 billion (as of June 30, 2011) in endowment and similar funds.[12] The university's research expenditures exceeded $753 million for the 2009 fiscal year and was ranked 9th among U.S. universities in research income[13] by the National Science Foundation. SONY Vaio VGN-AW160J/Q Laptop Keyboard Annually, the university hosts the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON), which is the world's largest student-run philanthropy.[14] The university's athletics teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are collectively known as thePenn State Nittany Lions. In 1862, the school's name was changed to theAgricultural College of Pennsylvania, and with the passage of the Morrill Land-Grant Acts, Pennsylvania selected the school in 1863 to be the state's sole land-grant college. In the following years, enrollment fell as the school tried to balance purely agricultural studies with a more classic education, falling to 64 undergraduates in 1875, a year after the school's name changed once again to the Pennsylvania State College.[15]COMPAQ Presario C700 Laptop Keyboard George W. Atherton became president of the school in 1882, and broadened the school's curriculum. Shortly after he introduced engineering studies, Penn State became one of the ten-largest engineering schools in the nation.[16] Atherton also expanded the liberal arts and agriculture programs, for which the school began receiving regular appropriations from the state in 1887.[17] SONY VAIO VGN-CR210EL Laptop Keyboard Atherton is still honored today by the name of a major road in State College. Penn State's Atherton Hall, a well-furnished and centrally located residence hall, is named not after George Atherton himself, but after his wife, Frances Washburn Atherton.[18] His grave is in front of Schwab Auditorium near Old Main, marked by an engraved marbleblock in front of his statue. SONY VAIO VGN-AR570 Laptop Keyboard Early 20th century In 2011, the university and its football team garnered major international media attention and criticism due to a sex abuse scandal in which university officials were alleged to have covered up incidents of child sexual abuse by former football team defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Two university administrators, DELL Latitude D620 Laptop Keyboard athletic director Timothy Curley and Gary Schultz, Senior Vice President for Finance and Business, were indicted for perjury. Sandusky was indicted and in June 2012 convicted on 45 counts for the abuse. Coach Joe Paterno was fired,[22] and school presidentGraham B. Spanier was forced to resign[23] by the Board of Trustees late in the evening of November 9, 2011. In response to Paterno's ouster, thousands gathered outside in State College on the night of the Trustees meeting and some caused damage to property. SONY VAIO PCG-FRV37 Laptop Keyboard Former FBI director Louis Freeh headed an independent investigation on the university's handling of the incidents and in July 2012 released his findings, which concluded that Paterno, along with Spanier, Curley and Schultz "conceal[ed] Sandusky's activities from the Board of Trustees, the University community and authorities" and "failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade."[24][25] On July 23, 2012 the NCAApenalized Penn State football with a $60 million fine,  Compaq Presario CQ42-173TU Laptop Keyboard a ban from bowl games and post-season play for 4 years, a reduction in scholarships from 25 to 15 per year for four years, the vacating of all wins from 1998 to 2011, and a 5-year probationary period.[26]In the years that followed, Penn State grew significantly, becoming the state's largest grantor of baccalaureate degrees and reaching an enrollment of 5,000 in 1936.[15] Around that time, a system of commonwealth campuses was started by President Ralph Dorn Hetzel to provide an alternative for Depression-era students who were economically unable to leave home to attend college.[15]HP Mini 210-2170nr Laptop Keyboard In 1953, President Milton S. Eisenhower, brother of then-U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, changed the school's name toThe Pennsylvania State University, and the university developed rapidly under his successor Eric A. Walker. Under Walker's leadership (1956–1970), the university acquired hundreds of acres of surrounding land, and enrollment nearly tripled.[15] In addition, in 1967, the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, a college of medicine and hospital, was established in Hershey with a $50 million gift from the Hershey Trust Company.[15]HP Mini 210-2080ca Laptop Keyboard Modern era In the 1970s, university became a state-related institution. As such, it now belongs to the Commonwealth System of Higher Education, and is not part of the fully public Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. In recent years, the university's role as a leader in education in Pennsylvania has become very well-defined. In 1989, the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport joined ranks with the university, and in 2000, so did the Dickinson School of Law.[19] HP Mini 110-1032NR Laptop Keyboard The university is now the largest in Pennsylvania, and in 2003, it was credited with having the second-largest impact on the state economy of any organization, generating an economic effect of over $17 billion on a budget of $2.5 billion.[20] To offset the lack of funding due to the limited growth in state appropriations to Penn State, the university has concentrated its efforts on philanthropy (2003 marked the end of the Grand Destiny campaign—a seven-year effort that raised over $1.3 billion).[21]HP Envy 15 Laptop Keyboard The largest of university's 24 campuses, University Park is almost entirely within the boundaries of State College borough, a site chosen to be near the geographic center of the state. With an undergraduate acceptance rate of 51 percent,[27] it is the most selective campus in the Penn State system, due primarily to the fact that students select University Park as their first-choice campus at a far greater rate than the university's other undergraduate campuses.[28]During the fall 2010 semester, 38,594 undergraduate students and 6,223 graduate students were enrolled at University Park.[29] Of those, 45.3 percent were female[30] and 30.6 percent were not Pennsylvania residents.[31]TOSHIBA Satellite L750-ST4N02 Laptop Keyboard In addition to the University Park campus, 19 campus locations throughout the state offer enrollment for undergraduate students. HP pavilion DV7-1000 Laptop Keyboard As of 2012, the chair of the board of trustees was Karen Peetz, a graduate of Penn State and Vice Chairman of BNY Mellon.[42] The main responsibilities of the board are to select the president of Penn State, to determine the goals and strategic direction of the University, and to approve the annual budget.[43] Regular meetings of the board are held bi-monthly and take place primarily on the University Park campus, although on occasion meetings are held at other locations within the Commonwealth.[44]HP 636376-001 Laptop Keyboard The president of the University is selected by the board and is given the authority for actual control of the university, including day-to-day management. In practice, part of this responsibility is delegated by the president to other departments of the administration, to the faculty, and to the student body. HP Pavilion dv6-3178ee Laptop Keyboard The executive vice president and provost is the chief academic officer of the University. As of November 2012, the provost is Rob Pangborn,[45] and the Associate Vice President and Senior Associate Dean For Undergraduate Education is Jeremy Cohen.
