University of Illinois at Chicago The University of Illinois at Chicago, or UIC, is a state-funded public research university located in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Its campus is in the Near West Side community area, adjacent to the Chicago Loop. The second campus established under the University of Illinois system, UIC is also the largest university in the Chicago area, having approximately 28,000 students[4] enrolled in 15 colleges. SONY VGN-SZ780 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan UIC's medical school is arguably its most prominent program. UIC operates the largest medical school in the United States, and serves as the principal educator for Illinois’ physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses and other healthcare professionals.[5] UIC's medical school has research expenditures exceeding $412 million and consistently ranks in the top 50 U.S. institutions for research expenditures.[6][7]SONY Vaio VGN-CR290E/AW Laptop CPU Cooling Fan In the 2013 U.S. News & World Report's ranking of colleges and universities, UIC ranked as the 147th best national university.[8] UIC competes in NCAA Division I Horizon League as the UIC Flames in sports. The UIC Pavilion is home to all UIC basketball games. It also serves as a venue for concerts. The University of Illinois at Chicago traces its origins to several private health colleges founded during the late nineteenth century, including the Chicago College of Pharmacy, which opened in 1859, the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1882), and the Columbian College of Dentistry (1891).[9] ACER TravelMate 4230 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The University of Illinois was chartered in 1867 in Champaign-Urbana, as the state's land-grant university. In exchange for agreeing to the Champaign-Urbana location, Chicago-area legislators were promised that a "polytechnical" branch would open in Chicago.[10] The Chicago-based health colleges affiliated with the University in 1896–97, becoming fully incorporated into the University of Illinois in 1913, as the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy. Medical education and research dramatically expanded in the succeeding decades, leading to the development of several other health science colleges, which were brought together as the Chicago Professional Colleges of the University of Illinois. In 1935, the first act of newly elected state representative Richard J. Daley was to introduce a resolution calling for the establishment of a Chicago campus of the University of Illinois.[11]ACER 23.TB2V1.003 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan In 1945, as the war ended, Daley (then a state senator) introduced four bills calling for a university in Chicago.[11] Following World War II, the University of Illinois increased its presence in Chicago by creating a temporary, two-year branch campus, the Chicago Undergraduate Division.[12] Known as 'Harvard on the Rocks' and housed on Navy Pier, the campus accommodated primarily student veterans on the G.I. Bill.[13] The campus was not a junior college, but rather had a curriculum based on Urbana's courses, and students who successfully completed the first two years' requirements could go on to Urbana and finish their degree.  IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T410 Series Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Classes at the Navy Pier Campus began in October 1946, and approximately 4,000 students enrolled each semester. As Chicago had no comprehensive public university at that time, most students were first generation college students from working families, who commuted from home. Demand for a public university education in Chicago remained high, even after the first wave of veterans passed, so the University made plans to create a permanent degree-granting campus in the Chicago area. Toshiba Qosmio G30-219 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan In 1951, Daley succeeded in getting the state senate to pass a bill calling for a Chicago campus. Daley became mayor of Chicago in 1955 and pressed the University of Illinois to upgrade the Chicago Undergraduate Center to a full-fledged four-year institution.[11] After a long and controversial site decision process,[14] in 1961, Mayor Daley offered the Harrison and Halsted Streets site for the new campus.[15] In that same year, what would later become the health science colleges became the University of Illinois at the Medical Center (UIMC). In a report on August 28, 2008, by newsman Derrick Blakely, CBS TV reported that in 1963,  HP COMPAQ 2510P Series Laptop CPU Cooling Fan the decision to build the University of Illinois decimated Taylor Street's little Italy. Florence Scala, Chicago’s legendary Taylor Street activist and long time Hull House cohort, blamed the board of directors of Hull House for betraying the thriving, vibrant, tight knit neighborhood.[8] They encouraged Daley to go ahead and destroy the neighborhood. Her challenge as to why the Hull House neighborhood and not the vacated and easily accessible Dearborn Station, resulted in the bombing of her home. In addition on November 10, 2003, WTTW Irv Kupcinet related a story about Mayor Richard J. Daley asking him what he thought was his most crowning achievement. Daley answered "Putting the school in the Italian neighborhood." Meaning the old Taylor Street neighborhood being condemned to make way for the Chicago Circle Campus.  HP 610774-001 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The new Chicago campus was named the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle (UICC) and opened in February 1965.[16] (The Circle part of the name referred to the nearby Circle Interchange.) UICC was designed by Walter Netsch of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, a Chicago-based architectural firm responsible for most of today's tallest skyscrapers.[17][18][19] Unlike the Navy Pier campus, Circle was a degree-granting institution. Many of the newly recruited faculty came because it was connected to a strong research university and they pushed for rapid development into a research-oriented school emphasizing graduate instruction. Within five years of the campus' opening, virtually every department offered graduate degrees. HP 532141-001 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan UIC offers eleven inter-college programs, some of which are organized as centers: Cancer Center, Center for Structural Biology, Neuroscience program, Council for Teacher Education, Graduate Education in Medical Sciences, Guaranteed Professional Programs Admissions program, Moving Image Arts program, National Center of Excellence in Women's Health, Office of International Affairs, Study Abroad Office, and the Office of Special Scholarship Programs. HP 3MLX8TATP20 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The university is run by the chancellor who is supported by seven vice chancellors, one CEO for administrative functions, and fifteen college deans. There is a library dean and three regional deans for colleges of medicine.[26] In December 1961, the final decision to establish a four-year university in Chicago was made, and for the first time a full-scale, four-year program was envisioned. A faculty Honors Council was thus established with plans to develop an enriching and challenging academic program for superior students. Dr. Arthur Pickett, Professor of Biology, was appointed as the first Director of the University of Illinois-Circle Honors Program after the new Circle Campus opened in 1965. HP 580718-001 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan In 1982, the Honors Council developed a proposal to convert the Campus Honors Program into an Honors College, with the goal of further enriching the academic experiences of honors students. Honors freshmen were required to enroll in a year-long interdisciplinary core sequence, and each honors student was given a faculty advisor. Upperclassmen were required to complete an honors project each term. The proposal emphasized that “Above all, it is hoped that the Honors College will enhance the intellectual environment for all students and faculty.” The proposal was approved by the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois that year. Susanna Pflaum, Professor of Education, was appointed as the first dean of the College.  Toshiba Tecra A2-S119 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Today, the Honors College resembles a small liberal arts college nestled within a large research university, allowing the University of Illinois at Chicago to offer the best of both worlds to honors students and faculty. The Princeton Review also looked at data on scholarships, financial aid and career opportunities.[52]Packard Bell NEW95 Laptop Keyboard UIC is composed of three campuses supporting more than 28,000 students and 2,400 faculty members and staff.[54] These campuses cover 311 acres (125.9 ha) in the Little Italy and the University Village section of Chicago. Acer eMachines G640 Laptop Keyboard The East Campus was designed in the brutalist style by Walter Netsch. The plan included second-story walkways that connected all of the buildings. Some of the later buildings in Netsch's design were not rectilinear (the Behavioral Sciences Building) and even irregularly shaped (Science and Engineering South, and the never-completed Art & Architecture building) HP Pavilion dv7-3000sl Laptop CPU Cooling Fan These demonstrated his idea of "field theory:" designs which used squares and rotations of squares superimposed on one another. While the buildings are largely intact, the walkways were taken down in phases during the early 1990s to make the campus more welcoming.[55] Considerable effort has been expended to modify the original Netsch campus plan to create the feel of a traditional college campus. For example, the area in front of the main administration building, University Hall, has been the site of several renovations in the last decade; and, the UIC Pavilion (a sports arena) was added in 1982. Toshiba Satellite L675D-S7104 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The East Campus is located on the Near West Side, just south of Greektown and a 15-minute walk from downtown Chicago. The juxtaposition of campus and commercial density was a direct result of large-scale urban renewal led by Mayor Richard J. Daley.[14] The proximity to downtown and public transit tends to attract students who want to experience life in a large citybut have a typical college campus[citation needed]. Between East and West Campuses is Little Italy. HP Pavilion dv7-6199us Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The West Campus is much older and includes some buildings built in the collegiate gothic style. The colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Applied Health Sciences and Public Health, as well as the Library of the Health Sciences are all located on the West Campus. The West Campus is in the heart of the Illinois Medical District where the University of Illinois Medical Center is located. HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx Laptop CPU Cooling Fan South Campus is in the University Village neighborhood, formerly the Maxwell Street area. There are no strictly educational buildings here; South Campus is composed of residence halls, athletic facilities, and a large presentation building called the UIC Forum. Since the East Campus was opened in 1965 several large-scale developments creating thousands of new residences have been built in the Taylor Street area. Development of The South Campus in the early 2000s included a rapid increase in new housing units.[citation needed]HP Pavilion dv7-3060ca Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The Chicago Transit Authority's Blue Line, part of the Chicago 'L', runs through the median of the Eisenhower Expressway along the north side of the campus. The East Campus contains four residence halls, the South Campus contains three, and the West Campus contains three. Until the South Campus expansion, UIC students were still predominantly commuters. However, the administration has worked to change the campus to one where most students are residential.[56] Nearly 6,000 students live within one-and-a-half miles of campus.[57] 3,800 students, including over half of all freshmen, live in UIC's 10 residence halls.[58] There are also thousands of apartments within walking distance to classes. HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx Laptop CPU Cooling Fan On the East Campus, Commons West and Commons South are traditional halls with double rooms opening into a common hallway; each floor shares a common bathroom. Courtyard and Commons North are cluster-style buildings with rooms grouped to share a small private bathroom. These four buildings are connected to the Student Center East which houses a cafeteria, the campus bookstore, a convenience store, bowling/billiards, a barber shop, and the Inner Circle (an assortment of fast food restaurants).  HP G62-340US Laptop CPU Cooling Fan West Campus housing is composed of the Single Student Residence (SSR, apartments for graduate students), Polk Street Residence (cluster style rooms), and Student Residence Hall (a traditional dormitory). South Campus is home to Marie Robinson Hall and Thomas Beckham Hall, both apartment style buildings. In the fall of 2007, James Stukel Towers opened containing suite style rooms with a bathroom and living room. Toshiba Satellite P300-161 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan In keeping with UIC culture, students often refer to residence halls by abbreviations instead of their full names (e.g. "TBH" instead of "Thomas Beckham Hall"). The main purpose of the SSR is to house graduate students, undergraduate students of the ages 24 and older, and professional students. The third and fourth floors house undergraduate students of the ages of 21 through 23. The nursing house is located on the 16th floor. The fifth floor of the SSR has a pilot program for students with families. The program can house up to 15 families.[59]HP G60-244DX Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Residents of the family program are zoned to Chicago Public Schools.[59] Families living in the SSR are assigned to Washington Irving Elementary School and Crane High School.[60][61] After the major $550 million South Campus expansion, the university began renovating existing facilities on campus. This focus is in part due to a constrained state budget: state funds for new buildings are scarce. Since renovation is less costly, this approach is being used to update facilities. HP Envy 15 Laptop Keyboard The first such renovations were to three original "pillbox" buildings: Grant Hall, Lincoln Hall, and Douglas Hall.[63] The renovated buildings use solar and geothermal power which required digging fifty wells 500 feet into the ground east of University Hall. The energy savings of 20–25% led to Lincoln Hall and Douglas Hall being certified US LEED Gold. Grant Hall did not apply for LEED certification even though it was the prototype for many of the features found on Lincoln and Douglas Halls.[64][65][66] [67] The new fascia are all glass and the buildings contain facilities for faculty and students. There are plans to expand the renovation project to every lecture hall cluster if the pilot program is successful. SONY VAIO VGN-CR520E Laptop Keyboard Other campus renovations include the roof of the Behavioral Sciences Building and the terrace of the Education, Performing Arts, and Social Work building.[68] UIC's team name is the Flames, a reference to the Great Chicago Fire which started a few blocks east of campus. There are several definitions of the area, that being the definition by the United States census bureau, the area defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) as the Chicago-Joliet-Naperville, IL-IN-WIMetropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), and the area under the jurisdiction of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (a metropolitan planning organization). The metropolitan Chicago population (CSA) is over 9.8 million people. HP Envy 15 Laptop Keyboard The Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) was originally designated by the United States Census Bureauin 1950. It consisted of the Illinois counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake and Will, along with Lake County inIndiana. As surrounding counties saw an increase in their population densities and the number of their residents employed within Cook County, they met Census criteria to be added to the MSA. The Chicago MSA, now defined as the Chicago-Naperville-Joliet, IL-IN-WI MSA, is the third largest MSA by population in the United States with a population of 10,055,638 (2009 estimate).[1] The Chicago metro area is the largest in an emerging Great Lakes Megalopolis. HP 634139-001 Laptop Keyboard The Chicago MSA is further subdivided into the Chicago-Naperville-Joliet, IL Metropolitan Division, corresponding roughly to the CMAP region; the Gary, IN Metropolitan Division consisting of the Indiana counties of Lake and Porter, as well as two surrounding counties; and the Lake County-Kenosha County, IL-WI Metropolitan Division. Chicagoland is an informal name for the Chicago metropolitan area. There is no official definition for Chicagoland, which may be larger than the MSA and include portions of the greater CSA. HP G72-b50US Laptop Keyboard Colonel Robert R. McCormick, editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune, usually gets credit for placing the term in common use.[2][3] McCormick's conception of Chicagoland stretched all the way to nearby parts of Iowa and Michigan.[2] The first usage came on July 27, 1926 (page 1), with the headline: "Chicagoland's Shrines: A Tour of Discoveries" by reporter James O'Donnell Bennett.[4] He stated that Chicagoland comprised everything in a 200-mile (320 km) radius in every direction and reported on many different places in the area. The Tribune was the dominant newspaper in a vast area stretching to the west of the city, and that hinterland was closely tied to the metropolis by rail lines and commercial links.[5]SAMSUNG N140 Laptop Keyboard Today, the Chicago Tribune's usage includes the city of Chicago, the rest of Cook County, eight nearby Illinois counties (Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Grundy, Will and Kankakee), and two counties in Indiana, Lake and Porter.[6] Illinois Department of Tourism literature uses Chicagoland for suburbs in Cook, Lake, DuPage, Kane and Will counties,[7] treating the city separately. The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce defines it as all of Cook, and DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties. [8]SONY VAIO VGN-SZ790N Laptop Keyboard However, there are differing viewpoints, which are usually the point of view of whomever one speaks with. For example, many residents who live in the further out satellite counties still refer to themselves as being "from Chicago" or "Chicagoans." Until recently, DeKalb County wasn't considered part of the region, but as the region continues to grow, it is now commonly defined as the "far suburbs" of the city. Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 Laptop Keyboard In addition, company marketing programs such as Construction Data Company's[9] "Chicago and Vicinity" region and the Chicago Automobile Trade Association's "Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana" advertising campaign are directed at the MSA itself as well as LaSalle, Winnebago (Rockford), Boone, and Ogle counties in Illinois, as well as Jasper, Newton and La Porte counties in Indiana and Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties in Wisconsin and even as far northeast as Benton Harbor, Michigan. The region is part of the Great Lakes Megalopolis containing an estimated 54 million people.  HP 597635-001 Laptop Keyboard The city of Chicago lies in the Chicago Plain, a flat and broad area characterized by little topographical relief. The few low hills here and there are sand ridges. North of the Chicago Plain, steep bluffs and ravines run alongside Lake Michigan. Along the southern shore of the Chicago Plain, sand dunes run alongside the lake. The tallest dunes reach up to near 200 feet (61 m) and are found in theIndiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Surrounding the low plain are bands of moraines in the south and west suburbs. These areas are higher and hillier than the Chicago Plain. A continental divide, separating the Mississippi River watershed from that of the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence River, runs through the Chicago area.  HP Pavilion dv6-2112sa Laptop Keyboard The suburbs, surrounded by easily annexed flat ground, have been expanding at a tremendous rate since the early 1960s. Aurora, Elgin, Joliet, and Naperville are noteworthy for being four of the few boomburbs outside the Sun Belt, West Coastand Mountain States regions, and exurban Kendall County ranked as the fastest-growing county (among counties with a population greater than 10,000) in the United States between the years 2000 and 2007.[12]HP Pavilion dv4-1319tu Laptop Keyboard Settlement patterns in the Chicago metropolitan area tend to follow those in the city proper: the northern suburbs along the shore of Lake Michigan are comparatively affluent, while the southern suburbs (sometimes known as Chicago Southland) are less so, with lower median incomes and a lower cost of living. However, there is a major exception to this. While Chicago's West Side is the poorest section of the city, the western and northwestern suburbs contain many affluent areas. According to the 2000 Census, DuPage County had the highest median household income of any county in the Midwestern United States. HP 508112-001 Laptop Keyboard According to the 2000 U.S. Census, poverty rates of the largest counties from least poverty to most are as follows: McHenry 3.70%, Dupage 5.9%, Will 6.7%, Lake 6.9%, Kane 7.4%, Cook 14.5%. In an in-depth historical analysis, Keating (2004, 2005) examined the origins of 233 settlements that by 1900 had become suburbs or city neighborhoods of the Chicago metropolitan area. The settlements began as farm centers (41%), industrial towns (30%), residential railroad suburbs (15%), and recreational/institutional centers (13%). Although relations between the different settlement types were at times contentious, there also was cooperation in such undertakings as the construction of high schools. HP Pavilion G6-1223TX Laptop Keyboard Daley was Chicago's third mayor in a row from the working-class, heavily Irish American Bridgeport neighborhood onChicago's South Side, where he lived his entire life. HP Pavilion G6-1223TX Laptop Keyboard He spent the free time he had at the Hamburg Athletic Club, a sports, social, and political organization near his home. Hamburg and similar clubs were funded, at least in part, by the Democratic machine politicians of the day. Daley made his mark there, not in sports, but in organization as the club manager. At age 22 he was elected president of the club and served in that office until 1939.[4] Daley, though he practiced law with partner William J. This was a matter of political opportunism and the peculiar setup for legislative elections in Illinois at the time, which allowed Daley to take the place on the ballot of the recently deceased Republican candidate David Shanahan. Daley then made a successful run for Cook County Clerk and held that position prior to being elected Chicago's mayor.[5] In the late 1940s Daley became Democratic Ward Committeeman of the 11th Ward, a post he retained until his death. HP Pavilion dv6-2112sa Laptop Keyboard First elected mayor in 1955 with a modest victory margin of 125,179 votes, Daley was re-elected to that office six times and had been mayor for 21 years at the time of his death. The agreement was without legal standing and ignored.[8] King's efforts in Chicago were largely unsuccessful, and his failure in Chicago was a serious setback for the Civil Rights Movement. IBM ThinkPad T42 2378 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The year 1968 was a momentous year for Daley. In April, Daley was castigated by many for his sharp rhetoric in the aftermath of rioting that took place after Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination. Displeased with what he saw as an overly cautious police response to the rioting, Daley chastised police superintendent James B. Conlisk and subsequently related that conversation at a City Hall press conference as follows[9]: HP Pavilion dv5218nr Laptop CPU Cooling Fan "I said to him very emphatically and very definitely that an order be issued by him immediately to shoot to kill any arsonist or anyone with a Molotov cocktail in his hand, because they're potential murderers, and to shoot to maim or cripple anyone looting." This statement generated significant controversy. Daley's supporters deluged his office with grateful letters and telegrams (nearly 4,500 according to Time Magazine), and it has been credited for Chicago's being one of the cities least affected by the riots. But others were appalled. Rev. Jesse Jackson, for example, called it "a fascist's response." The Mayor later backed away from his words in an address to the City Council, saying: Toshiba K000048100 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan "It is the established policy of the police department – fully supported by this administration – that only the minimum force necessary be used by policemen in carrying out their duties." Later that month, Daley asserted "There wasn't any shoot-to-kill order. That was a fabrication." In August, the 1968 Democratic National Convention was held in Chicago. Intended to showcase Daley's achievements to national Democrats and the news media, the proceedings during the convention instead garnered notoriety for the mayor and city, descending into verbal outbursts on the part of politicians, and a circus for the media.  IBM Lenovo ThinkPad T61 7659 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan With the nation divided by the Vietnam War and with the assassinations of King and Robert F. Kennedy earlier that year serving as backdrop, the city became a battleground for anti-war protesters who vowed to shut down the convention. In some cases, confrontations between protesters and police turned violent, with images of this violence broadcast on national television. Later, radical activists Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and three other members of the "Chicago Seven" were convicted of crossing state lines with the intent of inciting a riot as a result of these confrontations, though the convictions were overturned on appeal. SONY VAIO VGN-N11M Laptop Keyboard At the convention itself, Sen. Abraham A. As television cameras focused on Daley, lip-readers throughout America claimed to have observed him shouting, "Fuck you, you Jew son of a bitch." Defenders of the mayor would later claim that he was calling Ribicoff a faker,[10][11] a charge denied by Daley and refuted by Mike Royko's reporting.[12] A federal commission, led by local attorney and party activist Daniel Walker, later investigated the events surrounding the convention and described them as a "police riot.  Packard Bell EasyNote TJ61 Laptop Keyboard " Daley's supporters challenged Walker's credibility because of his well-known opposition to Daley and Chicago machine politics. Daley defended his police force with the following statement, which was also a slip of the tongue: "The confrontation was not caused by the police. The confrontation was caused by those who charged the police. Gentlemen, let's get this thing straight, once and for all. The policeman is not here to create disorder. The policeman is here to preserve disorder." Packard Bell NEW90 Laptop Keyboard Despite a decline in popularity following 1968, Daley was historically re-elected for the fifth time in 1971. However, many have argued this was due to a lack of formidable opposition rather than Daley's own popularity.[13] In 1972, Democratic nominee George McGovern threw Daley out of the Democratic National Convention (replacing his delegation with one led by Jesse Jackson). This event arguably marked a downturn in Daley's power and influence within the Democratic Party but, given his public standing, McGovern later made amends by putting Daley loyalist (and Kennedy in-law) Sargent Shriver on his ticket. In addition, it reveals, Daley withheld many votes from certain wards when the race seemed close.[14]SONY VAIO VGN-FS415S Laptop Keyboard Daley was usually open with the news media, meeting with them for frequent news conferences, and taking all questions — if not answering all of them. According to columnist and biographer Mike Royko, Daley got along better with editors and publishers than with reporters. From Royko: Toshiba Satellite A75-S231 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan "...in general, he views the papers as his enemy. The reporters, specifically. They want to know things that are none of their business, because they are little men. Editors, at least, have power, but he doesn't understand why they let reporters exercise it." Daley had limited opposition among the 50 aldermen of the Chicago City Council. For the most part, the aldermen supported Daley and the official party position consistently, except for a small number of Republicans from the German wards on the northwest side of the city and a small number of independents (a group that grew during Daley's mayoralty to represent groups that felt disenfranchised by Daley's policies). HP Envy 14t-1000 CTO Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Daley's chief means of attaining electoral success was his reliance on local precinct captains, who marshaled and delivered votes on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis. Many of these precinct captains held patronage jobs with the city, mostly minor posts at low pay. Each ward had a ward leader in charge of the precinct captains, some of whom were corrupt. The notorious First Ward (encompassing downtown, which had many businesses but few residents) was tied to the local mafia or crime syndicate, but Daley's own ward was supposedly clean and his personal honesty was never questioned successfully. ASUS M50 Series Laptop CPU Cooling Fan A poll of 160 historians, political scientists and urban experts ranked Daley as the sixth best mayor in American history.[15] Daley's ways may not have been democratic, but his defenders have argued that he got positive things done for Chicago which a non-boss would have been unable to do. While detractors point out that he did nothing to integrate what had then become known as the most segregated city in the nation, others argue that he was acting on behalf of his constituency, who did not want an integrated Chicago.  Toshiba Satellite L300-1BW Laptop CPU Cooling Fan On the 50th anniversary of Daley's first 1955 swearing-in, several dozen Daley biographers and associates met at the Chicago Historical Society. Many feel that by revitalizing the downtown area and firmly fixing the middle-class in place in the city limits, Daley probably did save Chicago from declining to the extent of the average Rust Belt city. Robert Remini pointed out that while other cities were in fiscal crisis in the 1960s and 1970s, "Chicago always had a double-A bond rating." HP Pavilion dv7-6169nr Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Its primary purpose was as a cargo facility for lake freighters, and warehouses were built up and down the Pier. However, the Pier was also designed to provide docking space for passenger excursion steamers, and in the pre-air conditioning era parts of the Pier, especially its outermost tip, were designed to serve as cool places for public gathering and entertainment. The Pier even had its own streetcar. Today, Navy Pier is Chicago's number one tourist attraction.[2]HP G62-b60SI Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Construction began in 1914 under the leadership of Charles Sumner Frost and took two years, at a total cost of $4.5 million. When it opened to the public in 1916, it was the largest pier in the world. The Pier was built both to handle shipping and as an entertainment site. The original Burnham Plan proposed five piers, but only one was commissioned. In 1917-18, during World War I (WWI), the Pier housed many Navy and some Army personnel, the Red Cross, and Home Defense units. It even had a jail for draft dodgers. ACER Aspire 1356LMI Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Even as Chicago Municipal Pier was being built, mass-produced cars and trucks were beginning to wreak havoc on the package freight and passenger steamboat industries ofLake Michigan. The Pier proved to be much more successful as a public gathering place. In the 1920s, the Pier expanded to have its own streetcar line, a theater, and an emergency room. It gained wide recognition in 1922 by hosting the "Pageant of Progress." In 1927 the Pier was officially named Navy Pier in honor of the Naval personnel that served there during WWI.[3]HP Pavilion dv7-6143cl Laptop CPU Cooling Fan In this period, the Pier was described as a summer playground, with recreational facilities that included picnicking areas, dining pavilions, a dance hall, auditorium, and children's playground. A radio station. WCFL, operated from the north tower of the auditorium.[4] During the 1920s, it is estimated that an average of 3.2 million visitors frequented the Pier annually. This decade is sometimes called the Pier's "Golden Age".HP Pavilion dv5-1203ax Laptop CPU Cooling Fan The advent of the Great Depression in the early 1930s, as well as the increased use of trucks and automobiles, resulted in the decline of freight and passenger ship activity; however, cultural and recreational use of the Pier continued. In 1933, the Century of Progress Exposition (World's Fair) on the lakefront also drew many conventions and visitors to the Pier. During the 1930s, the Pier also housed various New Deal agencies. In August 1941, Navy Pier was closed to the public, and in a five-month period was fully converted to a Navy training center designated to accommodate up to 10,000 service personnel. A large hangar-type building and a drill hall were built on 20 acres just west of the Pier. Six days before the attack on Pearl Harbor (7 Dec. 1941), classes began for aviation machinest mates, metalsmiths, and diesel mechanics. During the war, about 15,000 pilots, including future President George H. W. Bush, received carrier-landing training. Coordinated from a central operation in Chicago, this eventually had three levels: Pre-Radio School, mainly at Chicago Junior Colleges; Primary School, initially given by six engineering colleges across the Nation; and Secondary (or Advanced) School at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C., at Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay, and at Naval Air Technical Training Center Ward Island, near Corpus Christi, Texas. By December 1943, these Secondary Schools had reached their capacity, and a major portion of Navy Pier was quickly converted to a fourth school.[5]HP Pavilion dv9723cl Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Classes started at the Navy Pier Secondary School on 5 June 1944; Captain Edwin A. Wolleson was the Commanding Officer, and Commander Charles C. Caveny served as the Educational Officer. Lecture rooms, laboratories, and offices of the Navy Pier Secondary School were highly secure, controlled 24 hours by armed Marine guards. Barracks were set up on upper floors of three former exhibition halls, each accommodating up to 1,500 students. In addition to the tough instruction (up to eight months of 12-hour days), the men had the challenge of dealing with birds roosting overhead in the living quarters with little respect for Navy cleanliness.  DELL Inspiron N5030 Laptop Keyboard In mid-1946, with WWII over, the Navy returned Navy Pier to the City of Chicago. In the four and one-half years under the Navy, over 60,000 servicemen fron the U.S. and Allied nations trained at the Pier in several types of schools; this included about 15,000 electronic technicians in the two years of the Secondary School.[6]DELL Alienware M17xR2 Laptop Keyboard With the war over, Navy Pier went to the University of Illinois, which used the facility beginning in 1946 for a two-year undergraduate program primarily serving returning veterans. From the former Navy staff, Caveny stayed as the Undergraduate Division Dean, and Wolleson as the Dean of Students. During its University of Illinois days, Navy Pier was also the site of a string of public events. The International Exhibitions of the early 1960s drew attractions from around the world, including circus and folkloric dance acts, arts and crafts, and international cuisine. In 1965, the University moved to the Chicago Circlecampus, and the Pier again fell into disuse.[7]Compaq Presario CQ57 Series Laptop Keyboard HP 640436-001 Laptop Keyboard ACER 002-07A23L-A01 Laptop Keyboard GATEWAY M-6823A Laptop Keyboard
